Fashion and football looks to be a match made in Madrid

Japanese avant garde designer Yohji Yamamoto has created the new Real Madrid Adidas kit

Japanese avant garde fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto has designed the new Read Madrid Adidas kit which the club will wear in this season's Uefa Champions League as the Spanish side attempt to become the first team ever to retain the title.

The shirt will sell for €70, which is the usual price for a jersey but not for Yamamoto – price tags for his women’s and mens’ ranges are very much in the upper reaches of designer wear. His signature colour is black and so is the jersey which incorporates Easter symbolism – a dragon for greatness, glory and the power of the club and a dragon bird, an animal that is able to live in the most hostile situations. This, according to Adidas represents “the club’s resistance, determination and agility on its way to the victory”.

Last year, the brand brought in the designer to develop a new boot, which resulted in the Yamamoto adizero f50 boot which drew inspiration from Japanese imperial lion-dogs.

And for kit collectors, in addition to the “adizero” version of the kit worn by the players on the pitch, a limited edition of 1,500 jerseys will be sold in a commemorative box and with Yamamoto’s signature.
