Investec hires Owen Callan from Cantor Fitzgerald

Brokerage also hires Ronan Dunphy from Deloitte as it builds up research team

Investec Ireland has lured senior research analysts from Cantor Fitzgerald and Deloitte in Dublin as it seeks to build out its macro-financial research team.

Owen Callan is set to join Investec in the coming months from Cantor Fitzgerald's fixed-income team, where he provided market and macro analysis of the euro zone bond markets, specialising in Irish Government and financial sector securities.

He previously worked at Danske Bank in both Dublin and Copenhagen. He was with the Danish bank when it was an active buyer of Irish Government debt at the height of the financial crisis, on behalf US bond guru Michael Hasenstab's Franklin Templeton bond funds.

Mr Hasenstab made a €5.6 billion return on his €8 billion wager on Irish debt between 2011 and 2012 before selling off his final holdings earlier this year.

Investec has also hired

Ronan Dunphy

from Deloitte where he managed its in-house research function, producing regular reports on the domestic macro environment and banking sector, along with contributing economic analysis to Deloitte Corporate Finance.

Before joining Deloitte, Mr Dunphy worked with specialist fixed income house Glas Securities, which built up a sizeable business in the Irish market during the crisis before closing down in 2014 as bond trading levels declined. He will bolster Investec’s Irish economic, property and banking analysis.

The hires come after Goodbody Stockbrokers poached two analysts, John Cronin and Cian Harty, from Investec in recent months as it seeks to widen its financial services coverage. Investec expects to announce further appointments to expand its equities business in due course, the company said.

"Investec plc is committed to growing its capital markets business in Ireland," said Lesley Williams, head of equities at Investec Ireland. " As the only Irish broker that is part of an international specialist banking group we provide a unique offering to both corporates and institutions combining specialist local knowledge and research with access to the global reach and experience of the wider Investec group."
