The EU now has more than 100 gigawatts of installed wind electricity generation capacity, bringing it past a key milestone in renewable energy milestone, according to the industry’s main representative body in Ireland.

The Irish Wind Energy Association said yesterday that the EU recently past the milestone and that Ireland was a major contributor.

“Of the total figure 100 GW, wind farm installations on the island of Ireland have contributed 2127 megawatts (MW) of wind power capacity which can generate electricity over a year to meet the total consumption of approximately 1.53 million Irish households,” said the organisation’s chief executive, Kenneth Matthews.

“Ireland now ranks in the top 10 of best producers of wind energy in Europe.”
