Trailer for Maleficent

Angelina Jolie is evil in a sideways take on Sleeping Beauty

Here’s an interesting phenomenon. Again and again, we see films released that are catching up with supposed crazes already someway towards becoming as old as the yo-yo or the hula hoop. You could argue that movies about fairy tales meet this description. If any film was to blame it was Disney’s Alice in Wonderland back in 2010. Obviously, this wasn’t strictly a fairy story — it’s an adaptation of a 19th century novel — but it was close enough to trigger near-copycats such as Snow White and the Huntsman, Mirror Mirror Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and Jack the Giant Slayer.

Only the first of those movies was anything like a hit. As a result, Maleficent — starring Angelina Jolie as the witch that buggered up Sleeping Beauty’s life — ends up already looking just a bit old. This stuff? Still?

Never mind. It’s a pretty enough trailer. It looks as if the folk at Disney are (and why wouldn’t they?) paying tribute their own fine animated version of Sleeping Beauty from 1959. Just look at that headdress for starters. Robert Stromberg, special effects wiz, makes his debut with the epic. We wish him all the best. Mind you, if it’s a hit, we’ll be saddled with another dozen of these things over the next three years.
