Peter O’Toole is no longer with us

Enjoy a full recording of the great man in Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell.

By now you will have heard that Peter O’Toole has passed away at the age of 81. He was the real thing. Emerging from RADA in the early 1950s, it took him a decade to strike with Lawrence of Arabia. He never went away. By the 1990s, he had become a “character” as well as an actor. That sort of combination brings difficulties. But he still managed to pull off a considerable coup as Jeffrey Bernard, Soho’s greatest soak, in Keith Waterhouse’s play Jeffrey Bernard is unwell. (See subject and performer above outside Soho’s The Coach and Horses) Here’s the complete performance. A full obituary is on its way. Until then, enjoy one of the great celebrations (and warnings) on the subject of dissolution.
