1. They allowed Seth MacFarlane to do a few jokes and they were reasonably funny.

2. Neither Kathryn Bigelow nor Ben Affleck was nominated for best director. Almost nobody saw that coming.

3. Amour made best film and best director. The former looked just about feasible. The latter seemed close to impossible.

4. Beasts of the Southern Wild secured a best director nod. That fine film seemed to be fading fast with voters.

5. Both Emmanuelle Riva (oldest ever) and Quvenzhan√© Wallis (youngest ever) both make it into the best actress race.¬†It always looked like one or the other. Look how jolly they are above. Awww…
