I’m sure you couldn’t care less. But it has just been announced that Marilyn Monroe is to appear on the poster for Cannes 2012. If you do attend that sunny event you very quickly get used to seeing the year’s key image. It’s everywhere. The first year I went I felt I had been transported to a version of North Korea with Juliette Binoche as its own Kim Il Jung. The image is displayed most prominently over the Palais itself. A nine hundred foot Marilyn will presumably greet us this year. It was nice to see Binoche in 2012. It was pleasant to see Faye Dunaway in the same place last year. But can we have a man in 2013? People will talk, you know.

Chatter has already turned to the possible premieres at the 65th edition. Love, the new Michael Haneke flick, will almost certainly be on display. We should also see Walter Salles’s On the Road, David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis and Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. But the one we’re all hoping for is Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master. Sadly, the chances of that interesting film making an appearance are very slim indeed.
