Mr Turan’s Excellent Teeshirt.
A distinguished critic models fine beach wear.
Who’s this at tonight’s screening of Kornél Mundruczó’s supernaturally baffling Tender Son: The Frankenstein Project? Why, it’s Kenneth Turan, the veteran critic and film academic. I had spotted Kenny at a few screenings and noted that he seemed to be wearing an Ozzy (Osbourne) tee-shirt on each occasion. How surprising. When I finally stopped to chat to him, however, he explained that the logo, in fact, read “Ozu” (as in Yasujirō). He claimed that there is a whole range of tee-shirts rendering the names of great directors in the style of heavy metal acts. It seems he’s right.
For the record, like everybody else, Turan likes Mike Leigh’s Another Year, but fears that the Cannes jury might be “hoodwinked” into voting for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s dreary Biutiful.
