I encountered this truck on La Croisette last night. As you will see, the owners are urging us to go nuts in May for Mike Leigh Day. Nuts in May was, of course, one of Mike’s great TV plays from the 1970s. Tonight, his latest film, Another Year, premieres among the incongruous glam and glitter of Cannes. There is good news. Though there’s nothing here we haven’t seen before in a Leigh project — slope-shouldered Jim Broadbent, morose Lesley Manville — it proves to be a first-class addition to the canon. I reckon Ms Manville has a good shot of grabbing the best actress gong.

Check out the press conference (no shots of me alas) for a classic piece of Leigh stroppiness. You don’t have to look hard. It occurs during the very first question.
