There’s only 48 hours to go before the Cannes Film Festival begins, but most of the talk is currently about distant Icelandic volcanoes and unseasonal typhoons smashing the Côte d’Azur into oblivion. Could nature manage what the Maoists failed to accomplish in 1968? Could Cannes really vanish into the dust? Naaah! Not a chance. But it would be interesting to see what a festival with no Americans would look like. If I make it there, I’ll describe it in detail.
