    Bollywood boogie

    Fiona McCann

‘Sup all you Slumdog fans – or specifically, those of you who were foot tapping and knee jiggling through that last sequence of all-cast dancing. Bollywood is coming to Dublin, in the form of a five-minute short by Fishfilms, and dancers are in demand. The big blow-out boogie at the end is to be filmed on Sunday, April 19th, and all you have to do to be part of it is learn the dance steps below, and send an email to dublinbollywood@gmail.com with your name, phone number, playing age (?) and dance ability.  Via Culch.ie and Critical Junk.

    • Fiona, sorry but Bollywood is garbage

    • We need to get past the bowl of candyfloss nonsense that is slumdog and the fairytale lie that floats around Bollywood and veils the reality of a caste system and endemic poverty and deprivation that is the scandal of the world! Let them make movies about that!

    • Siobhán says:

      Thanks for this Fiona.
Haven’t seen Slumdog yet, but really like this clip and have passed it on to my daughter and nieces who are all dancers.

    • Fiona says:

Tim: Fair enough, no apologies necessary!

Finner: Well, in fairness to Slumdog, there’s plenty of poverty and deprivation depicted therein. I’ve just finished The White Tiger, though, and am reminded of that strange apartheid of the caste system. Wonder if they’ll make that into a film.

Siobhan: I hope it all works out for them.It may even be a flash mob dance, Irish style. Either way, there’s nothing like a good boogie.

    • Bollywood is in love with the idea of caste,A rich educated and absurdly beautifull group, confirmed in their status by a pseudo aristocratic heritage traipse around dancing and arranging marriages. Its all so light and gay and harmless ,except its not,Its deeply flawed, retrograde in its views and perpetuates a riches to riches lifestyle which insults the untouchables, or indian blacks or slaves condemned to worship and work for their masters! Slum dog is just a stupid idiotic rags to riches piece of fluff,When we know the reality is rags to more rags for the so called untouchables and this nonsense which does nothing to free them

There are other elements to Bollywood musicals. we don’t have to ditch the whole genre. Indeed there are many Hindi Musicals that are not set in fairytale land. Lagaan nominated for an Oscar is a case in point.
