    Perplexed by the programme?

    Fiona McCann

You’re not the only one. It certainly looks impressive, and most Fringesque in its luminosity and layout, but can anyone actually read the darn thing? Is that even the point? Tiny type, confusing categories and a bit too much flicking back and forth, say some. Too big and cumbersome and not portable enough, say others, though given that they work for the Irish Times, they haven’t much of a leg to stand on. . .

Me, I’m liking the mix of page textures, but the pink highlighter marker reminds me a little too much of my Leaving Cert notes, and so much of it seems to kind of defeat the purpose. Although is that the concept, with functionality irrelevant to the whole Fringe thing? Does anyone care?

I agree, in fact the programme is as bad as the website which is impossible to navigate and both seem cumbersome and clunky. Would a simple, easy to navigate approach to text and imagery not be easier for everyone?

    • Frank says:

Unfortunately I have to agree. Whoever designed it seems to have forgotten a basic design principle – namely that it should do what was intended i.e. get information across clearly for the programme.

I thought so too at first glance, but having gone over it a few times i think i get it.the point is to encourage you to flick back and forth,to look in categories you normally would not, and to make you work a little. i like it

      the website is worse…

    • kirstie says:

I abandoned it after about 4 minutes of swirly eyes and went to the website instead. Nicht Gut. The Deaf ones are always similar – yes yes, I’m deeply impressed by your graphic creds, but guys, can you make one we can actually read?

    • mary says:

my goodness we’re a snotty lot.

    • Grumpy says:

Can’t make head nor tail of it or the website – which is worse. Clearly they have lost the whole point of a programme which is to tell you what show is on, when, where and what it’s like. Why did they mess around with the website from a few years ago? At least I could find stuff easily. Programme reads a bit like an in-joke which if you’re not Fringe enough you won’t get. Maybe that’s the point though.
