What’s to like about this…? The definitive anthem of the Diaspora slaughtered by a Brit with a ‘Mockney’ accent…albeit who once had some street cred but is now a Labour apparatchik and lives in Dorset…and the reedy warblings the pop diva du jour… Other than the fact that Shane gets the royalties there is nothing remotely ‘good’ about this rendition. No-one but NO-ONE can sing this song with the defeated emotion of Shane MacGowan…Maybe you need to have experienced some of what the song is about to fully appreciate that…Who knows…? ‘Merry Christmas your Arse’…

Comment by diasporadoAh here, now I was just trying to be Christmassy! Would it have helped if I’d made it clear I thought the original was one of the finest songs ever written and no cover could ever do it justice? I still think this version is good though and I’ll not hear a word against Billy Bragg. Not a single word, I say!
