    So, what do you think?

    Conor Pope

Our new (gloriously free) site is live, but you probably already know that if you’re reading this post! I’d be interested to know what people think about it (the site, not this post).

The statement in yesterday’s paper wasn’t very well written. I (and some of my friends) had to read bits of it more than once to fully understand it.
Also, pity that you can’t get articles from eighteen months back without paying the full whack for the digital archive.
On the whole, though, it’s a welcome move and should have happened a long, long time ago.

I think this new site fabulous. We now have a decent online source of Irish news, something we’ve never really had before. It’s great to see the entire paper’s content available for all to view. This is wonderful for people like students and those who have low incomes who may be reluctant to pay for the relatively expensive paper, instead choosing a poor quality tabloid. Now, they too have access to the high quality journalism of the Irish Times.

My only concern is this: how will this websise make money? The launch of this site is likely to reduce the number of people who actually buy the paper, as they will instead use this site. This site is funded by advertising, but income from it will surely be much less than from the paper, especially as many people now use advert blocking software like Ad Block Plus. I do hope this decrease in revenue does not affect the quality of The Irish Times’ journalism.

    Hi,

Just logged in so I’m giving a qualified opinion….I thought that the old site was easier to navigate and easier to find your favourite sections – specific columnists, letters, price watch, archive etc – on tabs at the top (which no longer seem to be there)

However, I’ll try this out for a few days and then post again…I’m a creature of habit so it’ll take a bit of getting used to.

Doing away with the subscription is a good thing thing – even if it was a long time coming! I also see that the Tribune has a new site, so it seems that Irish papers are finally realising that online versions deserve investment…

My favourite new feature is very un-newsy….the simplex crossword has finally made it online!

Something to consider would be reader feedback on stories…

    Best of luck with it,

    Colette

Living in New Zealand I think the Irish Times has made a great move.

For years I’ve only been able to read the selected “free” articles on ireland.com. That left me with no option but to continue onto the Irish Independent’s free website to get my feed of home news, albeit in a tabloid style of reporting.

Could the tide turning in Rip off Ireland?!

    Well Done Irish Times.

What have they done to your blog? It’s unreadable – tiny text – no blog roll and the categories are impossible to read?? That’s just for starters!

It looks like a work in progress. Navigation isn’t all that intuitive and the style varies confusingly across different views. You seem to be trying to copy the NYT but it’s not really working for you. I hate to tell you but I think the Irish Independent site is better. And can you please, please, please identify the journalist in the hyperlink for articles – at the very least for the opinion pieces.

Looks nice so far, seems to be a few little bits that need work, like the tiny, tiny text. It’s feels really like some of those american websites, if that makes sense.
All in all I think I like it so far, well done.

Hi, I think the old site was easier to use and more appealing than the mundane, tiny text site that you have now. I’m glad that it is now free for everyone but what about the value some people who paid are missing out on?

    I miss the old site!

It’s great, glad to see it finally go free. There’s still a few niggles though, one which is the size of pictures in some of the articles (http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/newsfeatures/2008/0628/1214567636732.html), hopefully someone can sort that out.

Appreciate the move. Great to have a quality Irish news site at last. I’ve been depending on RTE and the Examiner which, to say the least, left a lot to be desired!

Congratulations on the opening up of the Irish Times but I too have concerns about the usability of the site. The tabbed navigation on the top of the site is not intuitive. It’s difficult to tell which tab is open and where I am on the site.

I’m surprised there is no breadcrumb navigation on the site too.

The font is too small to read.

The footer of the site is missing a site wide navigation too (no sitemap link, no link to the primary pages on the site, the roll over for © 2008 irishtimes.com is a white block!)

There is far too much cluttered content on the home page for my liking. It’s difficult to relax my eyes on a topic for a sustained period.

I think the site lacks a bit of personality too. It’s quite bland for my liking.

Sorry for coming across a bit negative but in saying all of the above, it’s a site I will use on a regular basis.

(Your version of Wordpress is out of date too, might be a security issue running an out of date version)

As a subscriber to ireland.com, my initial reaction is disappointment to the new site. Navigation and usability are not intuitive.

I found the letter’s section frustrating. Whereas previously, when you selected letters, they were all displayed together, now you have to click on each subject separately which takes from the flow of reading. I know that usability design dictates that users should not have to scroll down the screen to read text, but I do not feel that this should apply when reading a newspaper such as The Irish Times on-line.

I liked the old navigation system much better where you clicked on the tab at the top to see each section separately. Seeing all the articles’ headings listed on a single page feels too much like information overload and does not inspire one to read further.

Why change the site? It was fine the way it was

It looks nice and fresh, but probably needs a bit of fine tuning, larger fonts, etc. Other than that, I really like it.

I notice that the Irish Times Archive remains prohibitively expensive for most people. Frankly, €395 per year is a complete and utter rip-off.

Belated but welcome: the Irish Times website was one of the best news sites in the world in 1997 and until last week had become one of the worst. This is a great improvement and hopefully it will continue to improve. You should display the name of columnists on the Comment page, not just the title of their piece. Navigation could also be improved, as noted by others. But there are still far too many typos and grammatical errors, especially with commas. Can’t the Irish Times someone improve the quality of its writing, or at least copyediting?

Generally I like, good fresh design, fair balance between Web 2.0 gadgetery, content and getting traffic hopping on the new site.

One item that fuff’s me a bit is the homepage image. I’ve come back to the site a few times today and every time it throws me. I just don’t know which story its associated with OR indeed if its out there on its own like the old homepage photo you had.

I am delighted that you have opened up the site from behind the paywall. I think that the Irish Times should be competing with Comment is Free on the Guardian. There should be more blogs either by journalists or by inviting some bloggers into the fold. I think you need to do a lot more to put this site up on the top level with the Guardian.

Delighted that this Irish quality writing is now free. To be up there with the big guns like The Guardian I think that there should be more blogs by journalists, celebrities and established bloggers. That way you could have a Comment Is Free type site but with an Irish flavour. Keep up the good work.

The layout of the new site is driving me a bit crazy. I find myself continually editing hyperlinks to get to where I want to go. For instance blogs. Or, specifically the pricewatch blog. If you go to http://www.irishtimes.com/blogs/ you can see all the recent posts to blogs and click on a link to a single post. But, to get to the “main” page of the blog, you have to edit the hyperlink in the address bar because the “Pricewatch” in the right hand column is plain text, not a hyperlink. Worse than that, on the http://www.irishtimes.com/blogs page itself, the right hand side does not list blogs that you can click straight through to. God help anyone who isn’t comfortable editing hyperlinks themselves.

Re Tesco prices. Prior to Christmas sardines in Tesco were 39 cents. Today they are 55 cents. Lidl and Asdi are 39 cents. Irish Pride Wholemeal sliced pan was on offers and regular price of 1.65 before Christmas. Last week I was charged 1.90!
Flahavans H18 muesli was 1.79 per kilo bag before christmas. Today it is 4.05. Thats an increase of just 7%. Flahavans inform me that they have not increased their prices to Tesco!
