    1 Pat Kenny = 3 Derek Mooneys

    Shane Hegarty

    pat-kenny-2.jpgThose RTE salaries in full:

    1) Pat Kenny: €849,139
    2) Gerry Ryan: €558,990
    3) Marian Finucane: €455,190
    4) Joe Duffy: €367,804
    5) Ryan Tubridy: €346,667
    6) Derek Mooney: €242,408
    7) Marty Whelan!: €229,056
    8 ) Miriam O’Callaghan: €221,383
    9) John Kelly: €204,675
    10) Bryan Dobson: €193,610

    Some thoughts:

It could be argued that Pat Kenny is worth it. He delivers the highest ratings of any television programme, has a leading (and often very good) radio show, and he gives me something to write about every Monday.

Joe Duffy gives best value for money, with a show that has the biggest influence of any other broadcaster.

Gerry Ryan’s constant stabs at television continue to pay off for him. If not us.

Marian Finucane gets a fair wedge for only being on air four hours a week.

John Kelly gets well paid for hosting a radio show on a minority station, and a stale TV show in the margins of the schedules, although these figures are from 2006, which is when he was relegated so he may be on less now.

    And finally – Marty Whelan!

UPDATE: Here’s yesterday’s News At One item on the pay packets. Sean O’Rourke sounds a mite snappy, don’t you think…

Shame you used that cropped photo because I had a caption for it all lined up, what with a man carrying his bag for him in the door on Montrose. Pay says: “I thought that judge put you away?”

sean o’rourke’s half hearted attempt to defend the wages on the news at one yesterday afternoon were quite amusing too..

Did you hear Sean O’Rourke going through these details in full to show he was no longer in the top echelons – not quite explicitly talking about himself but the forensics of outlining everyone elses salary were hilarious!

Whelan gets more than O’Callaghan or Dobson?! Time for mutiny in RTE lads…

The point on John Kelly is an interesting one and I fully agree with you on The View Shane (I watched Joe Duffy pontificating on Rushdie one night a couple of years back and wanted to declare a fatwa on my living room). Kelly’s talent could be put to better use but I’d also be curious to see the type of deals people like Derek Davis are on. There are stand-in presenters all over the shop in there who are drafted in for holidays – are these guys on contract? Knowing RTE I’d imagine they probably are. Marty Whelan is another example. I get the impression his decision to shed the hair dye was made on the recommendation of his agent and the Montrose marvels have spent years trying to justify the negotiating calamity that followed.

Sean O’Rourke deserves to be paid better than most on the list. I find him to be an excellent presenter and interviewer. His slicing and dicing of the RTE dude around the time of the ‘minister is on coke, he told me himself’ scandal was extremely brave and utterly compelling.

    Re. 5

Sean, a lot of guys like Derek Davis are throwbacks to the long-term contracts at RTE. They are permanent and pensionable – there were a load of ‘em floating about after RTE cork was axed and they drift around the schedule producing here, presenting there, maybe making a little hobby documentary or doing coaching. Drifting along…

Dear God, it wasn’t Bebe Glazer who negotiated Marian’s contract, was it? She was representing a Dr. Frasier Crane in the US north-west last I heard.
