The Stag is a new Irish film that has been generating positive mutterings over the past while, and now, via Philly McMahon, here’s the trailer.

The story about a bunch of lads heading into the wild on a stag weekend will inevitably draw comparisons with The Hangover, but who cares, because the trailer is pretty funny, and you’d have to assume this film has an instant audience here and abroad. It’s directed by John Butler, written by Butler and Peter McDonald and produced by Treasure Entertainment (Good Vibrations, I Went Down, Shrooms.)┬áButler and McDonald were writers on the excellent RTE sketch show Your Bad Self. McDonald also wrote and directed Pentecost, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2012 in the live action shorts category. McDonald plays The Machine, who looks to be the liveliest character amongst the cast.

It has just been picked up by Arrow for distribution in the UK, so we’re looking at an early Spring 2014 release.

Earlier this month, Butler won the Director’s Finders Series, which means he now has the opportunity to screen his film at the Directors Guild of America Theatre in LA on 20th September.┬áBefore that though, The Stag will have its world premiere at TIFF in the festival’s ‘Discovery’ strand, which focusses on new directors and world cinema.
