PopLives #40: Julie Chance

Julie Chance is the lead vocalist of Kool Thing, the Berlin-based band comprising of Chance (from Dublin), Jon Dark (from Australia) and French drummer Valentin Plessy. They launch their debut album tomorrow at the Urban Spree in Berlin fresh from a brace of gigs at SXSW and several in Toronto.

Last film you saw and your verdict?
Side Effects with Rooney Mara, loved it, so many twists and turns and I defo wasn’t expecting one of them!
Last gig/concert you went to and your verdict?
Jon Dark said Zebra Katz at SXSW was amazing!
Last stage production you saw and your verdict?
I was made go see Dirty Dancing in London a few years ago with my sisters. Hated it… nobody puts Baby in a corner.
Last gallery / museum / exhibition you visited and your verdict?
Helmut Newton in Berlin. I always love the way he portrays women in his nudes, strong and sexy, I enjoyed it.
You have a golden ticket to Easons, what magazine is first on your list?
I would go for Source Magazine for contemporary photography, printed in Belfast and JD would probs go for Audio Technology or Sound on Sound.
What are your most clicked bookmarks?
Probably social media sites followed by music websites followed by torrent sites.
Do you have a favourite podcast or radio programme?
Love Dan Hegarty 2fm and Expatriarch Radio in Berlin (expatriarch.com/category/radio/)
When you fall into a YouTube hole what’s the general subject matter of the videos you’re watching?
Russian car crashes, Russians overdosing on GHB, and then probably cats doing funny shit, being cute, sleeping etc.
What song should we listen to right now?
Emma McKenna – ‘Column vs. Line’.
Which boxset/TV series do you have on the go at the moment?
The last obsession was Love/Hate, before that it was Homeland, but we’re looking to start a new one, suggestions welcome.
Which app do you use the most?
What’s app, Instagram, Google translate, currency converter, Skyscanner, Facebook, Shazam. Jon Dark has got a great music app – Guitar Toolkit – it has a metronome, tuner, tabs, chords, all sorts of things. It’s deadly.
Do you play video games or mobile platform games, and if so, what’s your favourite at the moment?
Mobile games, Temple Run is very addictive
What is your favourite club night of all time?
Berghain! Its the best club in the world
If you could transport one international cultural outlet to your home town, what would it be and why?
Probably Berghain again, but I dont think Dublin could handle it on its doorstep
