This third record sounds like it’s going to be quite a significant departure for the four Northerners. There’s a lightness at play, and as the title of both the album and this track indicate, a sense of furious optimism. With ‘Big Thinks Do Remarkable’, prisms of colour pop their heads up like meerkats sparked into observation by an approaching hyena. Whoops and blistering guitar work precede the layered vocals proclaiming “this sun is in our eyes”. Being blinded by the lights is one way to articulate this new found sense of delightful power.
Previously, And So I Watch You From Afar constructed their epics (and pretty much every ASIWYFA track is an epic as far as I’m concerned) around a blow to the chest, a feeling that shook the air from your lungs and scaffolded its way around your body before finally erecting a clenched fist. But here, there’s a sense of radiant joy, the slow builds replaced with a frantic tiltshifted timelapse of sounds in a flurry of activity, happily bouncing off each other like bonus balls lighting up a pinball machine.
Sometimes seriousness can be mistaken for depth. ASIWYFA have both seriousness and depth in their back catalogue, but as most musicians know, it’s often harder to make a happy song work. All hail bright futures indeed.
The band will be spending April in Europe, playing 18 gigs in 18 days across nine countries. The album is out March 19th on Sargent House.
