  • Ó Cuív takes a vow of silence

    May 8, 2012 @ 7:35 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

Does anyone remember one of Bertie Ahern’s better malapropisms, when he described some unsuccessful venture as a “damp squid”. One could not help being reminded of it this afternoon, listening to Éamon Ó Cuív expounding the reasons he is staying in Fianna Fail.

  • Have they gone ‘star’ staring bonkers?

    March 8, 2012 @ 11:53 am | by Deaglán de Bréadún

The silly season normally waits until the dog-days of August but it has come early this year. Incredibly, the main government party was planning a self-congratulatory event today in Merrion Square Park, close to Leinster House, to mark 12 months in government.

  • Kenny Wears the Green Jersey to Brussels

    March 1, 2012 @ 8:46 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

It’s been a while since the present writer was on assignment in Brussels. It takes a while to get back into the rhythm of the place. Happily I managed to find accommodation close to the EU complex of buildings and it is a blessing not to have to traipse all over town.

  • Bad Breakfast Reading for Fianna Fail and Labour

    February 26, 2012 @ 11:55 am | by Deaglán de Bréadún

First, the health warning: one swallow doesn’t make a summer and it would be wrong to over-interpret a single opinion poll. Nevertheless the figures in today’s Sunday Times Behaviour and Attitudes survey will make alarming reading for Fianna Fail and Labour.

  • If you’re explaining, you’re losing: the presidential campaign of 2011

    October 29, 2011 @ 10:50 am | by Deaglán de Bréadún

What are your stand-out memories of the presidential election? (more…)

  • Rebellion through the Ballot-Box

    February 27, 2011 @ 8:24 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

I’ve spent the weekend in Louth, chronicling the success of G. Adams in the constituency and the Sinn Fein electoral performance in general. I don’t feel qualified just now to pronounce in any detail about the overall result of the general election except to say that whoever remarked on radio that this was rebellion through the ballot-box put it very well.

  • Legion of the Rearguard

    February 26, 2011 @ 4:40 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

So that’s it then. All the prophecies of doom about Fianna Fail are coming true. Who would have thought it, five, four, even two years ago?

  • FG is the new FF

    February 14, 2011 @ 9:11 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

One of the first things to remembers about politics is that logic is a very poor guide. We may be in a phase in our evolution as a State when that maxim is about to be proven yet again. (more…)

  • FG, Sinn Féin and the Green Arrow

    February 11, 2011 @ 12:33 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

Fine Gael and Sinn Fein are the parties which appear to be doing best in the election campaign. FG  are advancing steadily but apparently inexorably in the polls. SF are holding up too. A lot of people will be alarmed by these two phenomena but it’s a time unlike any other that we have known.

  • Micheál Upsets the Apple-Tart (stet)

    February 7, 2011 @ 7:47 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

Not really sure about this Fianna Fail proposal that ministers should cease to be serving members of the Dail. They would be substituted from a list of alternates in the same way as Members of the European Parliament when they retire, etc.
