  • Reshuffle – early verdict

    March 23, 2010 @ 7:00 pm | by Harry McGee

I’ve written a piece of analysis for the online edition, which should be going up about now. Here is it (written slightly less informally than the blog).

There was never even a remote possibility that today’s Cabinet reshuffle would emulate Albert Reynolds’s sacking of eight Ministers when he became Taoiseach in 1992.

  • Rumour, Speculation, hot air.

    March 22, 2010 @ 6:59 pm | by Harry McGee

I’ve just finished a bit of punditing on one of the radio stations, in which I dispensed what knowledge I have (not very much) of what’s going on in Brian Cowen’s mind. (more…)

  • Country and Western Alliance 2009?

    November 5, 2009 @ 8:55 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

A certain wag who worked on this newspaper some years back used to have great fun at the expense of aspirants for jobs and promotions that appeared “on the board”. His favourite witticism was to tell one or other of the hopefuls: “Your name is being linked to the job – people are saying ‘Joe Bloggs hasn’t a chance of getting that one’.” Oh the cruelty of it! But it was very funny and the victim usually laughed as well.

  • The Outlook is Blue

    September 10, 2009 @ 10:07 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

Nothing is certain except death and taxes but the polls do suggest that a Fine Gael-led government is a strong possibility if, as many currently expect, a general election is held in the next six or nine months.

  • Splitting hairs over minister’s expenses?

    November 27, 2008 @ 1:08 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

Check out last night’s Vincent Browne news and current affairs programme on TV3 by clicking here and you will see a lively discussion on Mary Harney’s free hairdo (“standard wash and blow-dries”) from training and employment agency Fás.

  • Last Word on the PDs

    November 12, 2008 @ 12:07 pm | by Deaglán de Bréadún

Before they are washed away by the receding tide of political history, a few points need to be made about the Progressive Democrats. Joe Higgins described them as an “utterly malign influence” on Vincent Browne’s late-night TV3 programme but that’s too dismissive – they were not all bad, or all good. (more…)

  • Pee Dee or not Pee Dee, that is the question

    September 15, 2008 @ 11:30 am | by Deaglán de Bréadún

Bigger parties must wonder what they have to do to get the media attention that is lavished on the Progressive Democrats. Probably the reason is that the PDs were different: not a catch-all party that stood for anything and everything but a radical party of the right. (more…)
