  • The Queen’s Speech

    There seems to be general satisfaction in official circles with the first day of the visit by Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh. There were protests but no clear and present danger to the British monarch and her husband. The wreath-laying at the Garden of Remembrance went off smoothly, despite the clashes taking place nearby between Gardai and demonstrators.


  • Courage and the Northern Troubles

    It is reported that some people who displayed “courage” in denouncing the IRA during the recent Troubles were miffed because they weren’t invited to any of the events surrounding the current British royal visit.

    The Progressive Democrats arguably achieved most of their aims and their free-market, neo-liberal policies were adopted by the mainstream, so there was no further rationale for their existence. The SDLP in the North could say the same about their own role in the peace process.


  • What Brian Cowen was reading in the Connemara rain

    A Summer reading list of 38 books was circulated to all 195 Tory MPs in Britain as they set off on their holidays (see below). Meanwhile we are told that Brian Cowen’s holiday reading in Connemara* in the rain was the autobiography of John Hume, entitled The New Ireland and a collection of essays by the poet and philosopher John O’Donohue, who died last January.   • Let’s not get heebie-jeebies over the Hijab

    Two days ago I visited St Luke’s Hospital in south Dublin for a check-up. Last year I had radiation therapy there for prostate cancer and, thanks to the excellent treatment I got, the tumour seems to have disappeared. I say “seems” because you still need to see your specialist every few months, “to be sure, to be sure”. (more…)
