    The level of pre-Budget speculation is greater than ever and this can be attributed to two things. Firstly, kites are being flown about the dreadful things ministers might have to do, if they are pushed too far. A speech to your parliamentary party is a good vehicle in this regard, because it is bound to be leaked afterwards to the media.   • Labour achieving Dev’s vision?

    Labour was the cutting edge of the new Coalition in the last 24 hours. We had Pat Rabbitte, Joan Burton, Ruairi Quinn and Brendan Howlin all emphasising the need for stringency and there was a particular emphasis on the importance of real change under the terms of the Croke Park public sector pay and reform agreement.

  • Getting the Message at Last?

    Maybe the establishment in this country is at last beginning to get the message. The decision by senior banker Richie Boucher (51) to forego his Eur 1.5m pension top-up sends out a badly-needed signal that the sacrifices aren’t confined to the lower orders. (more…)
