  • Afghan War Looks More and More Futile

    The parallels between Afghanistan and the Vietnam War are growing all the time. Like LBJ, President Obama has a strong interest in social issues and clearly wants to make life better for ordinary citizens of the US. But Lyndon Baines Johnson was brought down by a slow-burning military disaster in a faraway land.

  • Wars and Rumours of Wars

    Your Humble Scribe was asked to chair a debate on Afghanistan last night at a Dublin hotel. Unfortunately, due to pressure of work (reporting on the Greens’ row with Dermot Ahern), most of the speeches were over by the time he got to the meeting.

  • Game for a Laugh with Barack Obama

     Here’s the YouTube of President Obama’s witty speech at the White House Correspondents’  Dinner last Saturday night. For some reason it is dated March 9th, not May 9th. Some of the humour is a little too esoteric for those of us outside the Beltway but it is still worth watching.

  • Three more names on the long list of casualties

     There is shock and outrage throughout the media. There had been threats and warnings for some time, so it was not altogether surprising that the Real IRA, after a lengthy period in the shadows, succeeded in killing two British soldiers in Northern Ireland on Saturday night. In a further grim episode, it is reported that a police officer has been shot dead in Craigavon tonight (Monday) and I have updated this blog accordingly.  (more…)

    It’s difficult not to see the funny side of the incident where the “journalist” threw a shoe at President Bush in Baghdad ( see also previous blog on the subject) and I have to share this piece of badinage with you.
