High Jinks in Leinster House
Deaglán de Bréadún
HIgh jinks in Leinster House! Mattie McGrath, after a long threatening, finally voted against the Government. But there was discomfort for Labour, too, with Tommy Broughan sticking to his, er, guns by voting against as well.
The prospect of defeating the Government is most alluring when you are in Opposition but one wonders if it wouldn’t have been more beneficial to be seen to stick to the Labour policy of opposing blood sports?
The Dog Breeding legislation is the last great hurdle before the summer. There is more room to manouevre here: the Stag Bill was really about Ward Union or no Ward Union Hunt.
I see John McGuinness suggesting on Newstalk that a minister would have to throw down the gauntlet to Cowen for a serious “heave” to take place in FF. Nobody has put his or her head above the parapet. Last Sunday’s RedC poll suggests the FF support has”bottomed out” and that there is a core that will not be moved.
If the figures were to go even lower, there could be trouble. Talked to an FF TD last night who was pretty well resigned to losing the next election although he added in hope: “You never know.”
