Bás Tragóideach i Nua Eabhrac/Tragic Death in New York

    Deaglán de Bréadún

(English Summary below) Seo an chéad bhlog go bhfios dom a scríobhadh i nGaeilge ar láthair an Irish Times (nó “Trathscéal Éireann” – an leagan Gaelach is ansa liom). Ós rud é gur blog polaitiúil atá ann is dócha gur cóir scríobh faoi imeachtaí na Dála nó staid na tíre i gcoitinne.

Ach nil an fonn sin orm. Taim in isle bri tar eis dom sceal tragoideach, neamh-pholaitiuil a chlos ar an raidio ar maidin. Bas Natasha Richardson ata i gceist agam, tar eis timpiste sciala (skiing accident) i gCeanada.

Is tre cursai polaitiochta a chas me ar an mban-aisteoir cailiuil ud, Mi Iuil seo caite. Bhi an Taoiseach, Brian O Comhain, ar turas go Nua Eabhrac ag lorg infheistiochta don tir seo; bhi me fein agus roinnt iriseoiri eile ag coinneail sul air agus ag cur tuairisci abhaile faoin sceal.

Chomh maith le cursai gno, bhi ocaid ar leith ann a bhain le cursai ealaiona agus sraith dramai a bhi a leiriu i Nua Eabhrac ag  Amharclann na Mainistreach agus Amharclann an Gheata. Bhi failtiu ann don Taoiseach agus i measc na n-aionna bhi Natasha Richardson agus a fear cheile, Liam Neeson. Bhi an teocht an-ard go deo agus is cuimhin liom go raibh an bheirt acu gleasta in eadai bana: bi ag caint ar stil, a bhuachaill!

Cuireadh an bheirt acu in aithne dom agus ghabh me comhghairdeachas agus buiochas do Natasha agus da clann chailiuil aisteoiri as an bpleisiur a thug siad duinn uilig thar na blianta san amharclann agus sa phictiurlann araon. Is cuimhin liom freisin go mbiodh a mathair Vanessa Redgrave ag tacu leis an ngluaiseacht cearta sibhialta i dTuaisceart na hEireann nuair a bhi se ar siul.

Is mor an briseadh croi e, bas Natasha Richardson, da fear cheile agus da cuid paisti, gan tracht ar na gaolta agus cairde go leir a bhi aici. Is mor an chailliuint i don saol ealaiona i gcoitinne agus duinn uile chomh maith. Suaimhneas siorai da hanam dilis.

English Summary: This is the first blog in Irish, as far as I know, to appear on the website of The Irish Times (Tráthsceal Éireann is the Irish version I like best). I suppose I should be writing about events in the Dáil, or the state of the country but instead I shall focus on a tragic human story I heard on the radio. This was the sad death of the actress Natasha Richardson after a skiing accident in Canada. Last July, the Taoiseach Brian Cowen travelled to New York seeking US investment in Ireland and I was one of the journalists covering the trip. There was also a special artistic occasion on his itinerary, to mark a series of dramas brought to New York by the Abbey and Gate Theatres. Among the guests were Natasha Richardson and her actor husband Liam Neeson. It was high summer and both of them were dressed very stylishly in white. I was introduced to Ms Richardson and congratulated and thanked her for all the pleasure she and her illustrious family of actors had given us on stage and screen over the years. I recall also that her mother, Vanessa Redgrave was a supporter of the Civil Rights movement in the North when it was underway. Natasha Richardson’s death is a great heartbreak to all her loved ones and a great loss to us all. Eternal peace to her faithful soul.

    • Mairéad Ní Chinnéide says:

Is mór an chailliúint da fear céile agus dá bheirt mhac bás Natasha. As an baile céanna dom féin agus Liam Neeson agus is cuimhin liom é i ndráma Gaeilge ag an fhéile drámaíochta sa Bhaile Meánach nuair a bhí sé fós ar scoil. Bean uasal is ea a mháthair Kitty.

    • Eimear says:

Caitheamh mór ina diaidh dá fear agus dá clann, cinnte.

Tá mé ag súil le níos mó blagmhíreanna a léamh uait as Gaeilge, amach anseo. Is deas an rud é alt a léamh ó am go chéile atá scríofa i nGaeilge ach gan cursaí teangan a bheith ann mar ábhar.
