Somebody please help me. I’m trying to figure out if this is one of those cultural, age or personality type issues. Oxygen?

I won’t deny it – I’m a pretty boring person. My idea of a good time involves curling up with a good book, watching a movie, watching a football match or hanging out at a coffee shop. Camping out at a music festival doesn’t make it onto my list.

You can have curling up with a book, and camping at a festival. I didn’t camp at Oxegen, but i’ve camped at Electric Picnic and as long as you don’t mind being a bit mucky, and not getting too much sleep, there’s a great atmosphere and it’s a lot of fun!

This year was great (I say this, post-shower!) actually. Really well organised, with none of the “carry on”, as my mother would say, of other years. And it wasn’t all that mucky.
Incidentally, in general my idea of a good time is pretty close to yours: good book, newspaper or magazine and I’m happy. And when it comes to Croke Park, I’d almost rather watch the DVD than make the three-hour trek. But music festivals are about a lot more than just the concert, and once you’ve got your wellies there’s very little discomfort. That said, it wasn’t all that rainy, and I only live 20 minutes away so I had going home as my fall back plan.

It’s interesting that you should mention Electric Picnic, Raptureponies. A friend also brought it up yesterday.

I don’t know Rosemary, but I guess I have a year to think about it.

From what I’ve read of your blog so far you seem like an open-minded kind of fella Bryan, so I can only suggest you get yourself a press pass for Electric Picninc and give it a go. You’ll be surprised at how much fun camping for three days in rain and mud can actually be (aided by the consumption of a few light ales and some great music)

Bryan you could always go to Electric Picnic as a way to ease yourself in - it’s much more laid back, I reckons.

Electric Picnic is a way different atmosphere, very, very relaxed, and no messing! I’m with Neill on the press pass suggestion, no harm in giving it a go!

Or you could start with Castlepalooza, it’s like camping in your back garden.

Thanks R, I might give that a go. And what’s Castlepalooza?

th music aspect of it is brillant Bryan, but camping there is even more horrible than it looks. Had to leave a bit early last night because someone was htretening to burn down our tent

Andrew, how realistic is going during the day, leaving at say 3 in the morning, the going back the next day?

Brian, normally I would agree with you. I class myself as pretty dull too when it comes to partying. Give me a house party and a bottle of good wine any day. This ear was my first trip to Oxygen. the line up as so good I had to go.

Now, I am seriously deprived of sleep and until my shower this evening, I was splattered with mud and dead bugs, but I have to say it was well worth it. I think the trick is just to embrace the atmosphere and be positive.

Okay Lottie, because of ‘peer pressure’ - I reckon I’ll give it a go.

Bryan, well we’re all different and i guess that keeps things interesting. while i agree that EP is an excellent occasion, i would recommend that bryan get himself out to one of the many smaller festivals around the country. if its less than five thousand, tis great, and if even lower, its better. the smaller crowds and the more relaxed atmosphere, minus the overinflated commercial c*ap, makes for some great musical weekends, and a reak “getting-away-from-it-all”.

Castlepalooza is a mini festival in Tullamore, Fight like Apes, the tassel club, Republic of Loose DJ set, (i’m not exactly sure what that’s all about!), the flaws, the chapters.

It would be a very gentle, but enjoyable introduction to the festival experience!

    Bryan, Go for it!

Be open, positive and throw yourself into it with a good friend or two and don’t just “observe”; try to be a part of it as well.

I’m liking the ’smaller’ festival suggestions. If I can help the camping out thing though, that would be fantastic. Is there a way I can do the festival thing and not have to sleep in a tent?

Bryan, go to Electric Picnic for the rest of us reluctant festival-goers who would not have your courage and then blog about it! Better still, get Madam Editor to pay for it!!
