Saturday Book Club: Fishing in Utopia

    Bryan

    Fishing in Utopia

The first book I would like us to read is Fishing in Utopia: Sweden and the Future That Disappeared by Andrew Brown.
I picked this book after having read its review in the Economist. Based on that, it sounded like there were many parallels between Sweden’s transformation and what has happened in Ireland. That, and I have always had a thing for Sweden.

I was pleasantly surprised when I went down to Dubray Books in Shop Street, Galway. I didn’t expect them to have this book in stock, but they proved my wrong. Hopefully that means it is available from a variety of book shops. If anyone has any trouble getting a hold of it, Dubray are selling it online as are Amazon.

From the little that I have read, I think this is a very well written book that is easy to read. The chapters are short so let’s try and go for 4 chapters a week. We will start with chapters 1 – 4 (inclusive) on the morning of Saturday 26 July.

bryan, firstly congratulations on the blog,i find it very interesting. secondly, the book club is a great idea (and the book you have chosen looks very interesting too) and i’ll be picking up a copy tomorrow. can i make a suggestion though? generally the majority of people would interact with the blog throughout the week rather than on the weekend (in work etc.) maybe holding the discussion day on a thursday or friday might be better?

    • Bryan says:

Thank you; and that’s a good point Ciaran. We’ll see what other people think. But for the moment, let’s say that we’ll make Thursday the discussion day? Which means Chapters 1 – 4 will be discussed on Thurs, 24 July.

i like the sound of this Bryan. i don’t want to make any promises I can’t keep but i’ll do my best. Are all the books going to be non-fiction?

    • Bryan says:

Hi Andrew. Most of them will be non-fiction. The bar will be set very high for fiction, but I’m sure a couple will get in there. And don’t worry about promising anything. I’ll be thrilled whenever you can participate but it won’t be a train-smash when you can’t.

    • ciaran says:

just a heads up bryan, i fear that due to work commitments i may not be able to take part in the morning, but hopefully that won’t be the case..if not i shall definitely make it happen that i’m around for the second discussion, whenever you fix it for!

    • Bryan says:

That’s absolutely fine Ciaran. I’m hoping that the discussion will go on all day and maybe carry on for a few days. So feel free to share your thoughts whenever you can and hopefully a few of us will discuss them with you.
