Declan – shite, I thought Rosa was a guy? I always think that those long, pompous, boring, self-indulgent comments could only be written by a male. Jeez….

J – tbh I don’t think any rational person would have thought I was being serious with that comment. Again, that’s the problem with the internet – no-one knows your tongue is in your cheek (just as the internet allows cowards to have a pop at people without using their real name)

Is ‘old fart’ not an insult? I wasn’t just referring to that comment, simply point out that sometimes you resort to mocking people/their comments rather than sensible argument.

Really loved the tunes Niall posted, listening to them yet again at the moment. Pity about the purist attitudes, like as if he has to be a freakin expert to have an opinion on his own website.

Just wait, I bet that monumental pain in the hole Rosa will be on here, maybe even with a different name (or several!) writing more essays. Lord know’s she needs to either get the last word in or say something dismissive/patronising before she can get lost. She obviously loves trad (sorry for the “hipster friendly” terminology luv) but attitudes like hers are what takes away from the important thing, the music.

This is the problem with blogs vs newspaper/magazines, if it hadn’t been a blog and people bitched about the headline Niall could have dropped the sub in the shit instead.

J – no, I didn’t slag anyone off – I slagged off the pompous comment which caused me to guffaw loudly when I read it. Very hard for me to slag off anonymous commentators, even though it’s obvious that those who attacked me (ie personal attack, not an attack on what I said) know me very well but just don’t have the balls or the bravery or the courage of their convictions to use their real names. Sigh Such is life, J, such is life on this little island of ours. No need for you to don a helmet, unless you want a game of hurley in the park at lunchtime?

As for Nialler, he did explain the headline. I’ve no problems with the headlines – headlines are there to draw in the reader and it certainly did that!

I had no problem with Nialler 9′s piece on trad music. I think what seemed to rub some of those people up the wrong way was the headline of his article (‘Five Reasons why Irish Trad has been reinvigorated in 2012′) – they seemed to be claiming that it had been reinvigorated long before that. But at least Nialler 9 dealt with the complaints sensibly and with some respect, which isn’t always the case here. He also later admitted his headline was misleading. It’s nice when writers are able to hold up their hand and admit that maybe they way they wrote something wasn’t the best way of explaining their point.

I agree with Gearoid. It was the way certain fellow-bloggers reacted which was the most embarrassing aspect to that particular fiasco, including yourself Jim. As Chancey Gardner and Treasa both pointed out in the comments section of Nialler 9′s blog, you often resort to simply insulting people rather than properly arguing why you think they are wrong. (…puts helmet on in anticipation of a slew of slagging from Mr. Carroll).

Sadly, this is true. I was just flabbergasted by that purist comment too and thought at first that it was a joke. But then the follow-up was breathtaking in its outlandishness and stupidity that it had to be for real. And Irish trad activists wonder why so many people go “meh” at the music and scene? With champions and proponents like that?

I read that Nialler9 ‘purist’ comment with much bemusement over the weekend. Aside from how poorly written and angry it seemed (to me), it was woefully misguided. If artists had always stuck to some appointed notion of ‘purity’ we’d still be living in caves.

This is nothing new of course.

Gearóid – don’t know about that. As he said himself in one comment, he was introducing acts which people mightn’t have heard about before and used the trad link to bring the post together. As for the “ad hominem attacks”, they gave ad hominem as good as they got ad hominem. After all, the first such ad hominem attack was made by one of the disgruntled purists who has inspired this post, Rossa or Phunty or someone like that.
