New Music – Maria Kelly, Video Blue, AS Fanning
Three highlights from last weekend’s HWCH festival in Dublin
Every week, we highlight a couple of new acts from around the globe who’ve caught our attention. Please feel free to share tips with us or check out all past New Music selections here.
Maria Kelly has already featured in OTR in the series of HWCH Q&As last week but her show at the festival over the weekend was quite something else. The Westport native has a beguiling folky voice which pitches her strong, memorable material into another realm entirely. Kelly’s band is also worthy of note, an ensemble neatly matched to the sway and graceful poise of her performance and songs like “Stitches”.
Dundalk native and London resident Jim O’Donoghue Martin’s performance at Tengu was a bit of a cracker. One man armed with a guitar and a bunch of beats, he’s got a very fine handle on how to turn both parts of his musical personality into a bundle of captivating, occasionally giddy and always impressive leftfield pop gems.
Dublin born and now Berlin based, Steve Fanning appears to be wielding a darker pen when it comes to songcraft than was the case in his previous bands The Last Tycoons and Porn Trauma. The set at Tengu was full of material which put Fanning’s striking baritone front and centre and also highlighted an observational eye about the local and global which made for the stuff of some meaty songs like “Carmelita”
