New Music – Jonen Dekay, Cruiser, Proper Micro NV
An all-Limerick new music special because, let’s face it. they’re not going to win the All-Ireland this year
Every week, we highlight a couple of new acts from around the globe who’ve caught our attention. Please feel free to share tips with us or check out all past New Music selections here.
One of the big hits at Limerick’s Make A Move festival last weekend was 17 year old local rapper Jonen Dekay. After his performance at the festival in 2015, Dekay started working with Andy Connolly (Deviant & Naive Ted), Godknows and Murli (Rusangano Family) in the Music Generation workshops in the city and the result is a really strong mixtape “Passionate Example”. Dekay has a superb way with his pen when it comes to observations and insights and he’s also got a good handle of future anthems with the likes of “Cold Mornings” and “Sunset In LK” standing tall.
Wham-bam punk rock with mad melodies and infectious guitar crunch from Limerick four-piece Ger Devine (vocals/guitar), Chris Quigley (lead guitar) Stephen Savage (drums) and Rachael Drennan (bass). Aside from support slots to the likes of Windings, they’ve also put the final dob of spit and polish on their debut EP “Hot 4 U”, which includes some fine commentary on the Irish electorate in “Next Election”. Great fuzzy music for fuzzy heads everywhere.
One of the most interesting new voices on the Irish scene in some time, Limerick dude Rory Hall’s new EP is a great showcase for his distinctive, soulful, bittersweet vocals and off-kilter electronica. “Revive”, in particular, is a keeper, an enthralling tune which demonstrates the Spin South West DJ’s great sense of musical place and direction.
