New Music – Luna Shadows, Sampa the Great, Paperwhite
New music suppliers from Los Angeles, Sydney and Brookyln
Every week, we highlight a couple of new acts from around the globe who’ve caught our attention. Please feel free to share tips below or check out all past New Music selections here.
Los Angeles rising star Luna Shadows has some heavyweight helpers in her camp, including producers and collaborators who’ve worked with The Naked and Famous, Now Now and The Chain Gang Of 1974, but she’s the one running this show. “Cry Wolf” is a killer pop tune, a track full of wild emotional honesty, superb dark-hearted riffery and splendid melodic know-how. The former LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City student is set to kick out the jams with the future sound of Echo Park.
There’s a lot to wow about in the work of this Zambian-born, Botswana-raised and Sydney-based rapper, poet and singer-songwriter. Her debut release from late last year, “The Great Mixtape”, is a good place to start to explore the breath and depth of her strong flow, colourful funk and fine handle on how to make soulful r’n'b and hip-hop resonate with the listener. A more recent track “Blue Boss” is a killer destined for many playlists this year.
“Unstoppable” is a track to make you sit up and pay attention. Paperwhite siblings Katie and Ben Marshall were knocking around a year or two ago – “Got Me Goin’” from that period comes highly recommended – but the Brooklyn dream-pop duos new tracks come with amplified layers of lush, atmospheric, sensual sounds. More new tracks coming soon too.
