New Music – Kiiara, Screaming Peaches, AikJ
Acts now arriving from Illinois, London and Dublin at the OTR new music station
Every week, we highlight a couple of new acts from around the globe who’ve caught our attention. Please feel free to share tips below or check out all past New Music selections here.
Bringing the pop noise from Illinois, Kiiara is a smart 20 year old with a grand plan when it comes to wonky, off-kilter, snappy pop. “Gold” displays a wonderful sense of otherness with its snatches of electronic glitch and r’n'b guile, but never loses sight of the fact that there’s a huge hook working its way into your ears. New track “Feels” sounds just as sweet-and-sour, which is a good thing. Looking forward to hearing more from her in the shape of the forthcoming “Meet Me In The Cornfield” EP to see if she’ll be giving up her day-job in a hardware store.
Formerly known as Movie until someone who knew about SEO stuff probably had a word in their ear, Screaming Peaches are a London-based outfit cutting a dash with a strong, vibrant, funky-as-hell disco-pop. “Sad Kids” from the forthcoming “Rough Music” EP, is a bit of a stonker, an infectious groove with a melancholic shadow at the heart of the groove.
Aik Jolayemi is one of the newcomers selected for this year’s Hard Working Class Heroes’ festival in October and he’s someone already displaying oodles of potential. The young Dubliner’s tracks to date, especially “Heights”, are bubbling with strong production traits, crafty urban pop hooks, smart beats and a really good use of his soft, attractive voice.
