New Music – Speelburg, I Know Leopard, Slaves
New sounds for your ears from Brighton, Sydney and Kent
Every week, we highlight three new acts from around the globe. Please feel free to share tips below or check out all past New Music selections here.
The enigmatic “Kline” is what has drawn us to the Belgian/American producer and singer who grew up in France and now resides in Brighton. Earlier track “Aubrey” is equally soulful and dramatic pushing Speelburg’s voice and choir of oohs and aahs to the fore against a wash of shadowy Portishead-esque sounds and effects. He’s also worked with Bondax on the charming “Something Good” so expect more of that kind of thing in 2015 from him.
OTR’s fondness for Australian music continues to bloom. From Sydney, I Know Leopard’s new track “Perfect Picture” stood out a mile on a recent airing on Triple J. Smart, lush pop with some retro nips and tucks around the edges, it’s the sound of a band confidently hitting their stride. Check out their debut EP “Illumina” from earlier this year here.
We first came across Slaves opening the Other Voices’ stage at the Electric Picnic earlier this year. A two-piece punk rock outfit from Kent rocking braces and a superb racket, Slaves are the kind of band built for the road. When you hear a track like “The Hunter”, you just know they’re an act many people will be talking about in glowing terms throughout 2015.
