From the paper: 2fm, French music and Matthew E White
Some Monday morning reading material to go with your coffee
As Dan Healy takes over the gig as the big kahoona at 2fm, I wrote a piece for Saturday’s newspaper offering him some unasked for advice about what to do now. As I point out in the piece, it’s not as if the station’s woes and intertia have not already been identified many times before, but no action has been taken so the ball is firmly in his court.
The Irish Times’ Magazine went to France at the weekend to coincide with Bastille Day. My piece about French music now is here, looking at how this year’s musical triumphs by Daft Punk and Phoenix are just the tip of the croissant when it comes to great sounds from that great country.
Finally, one of the albums I’ve kept going back to again and again this year has been “Big Inner” from Matthew E. White. I caught up with recently to talk about soul, faith, jazz and justice and you’ll find the interview here. Catch the man from Virgina this week when he plays Róisín Dubh, Galway on July 17 and Iveagh Gardens, Dublin, as support to Grizzly Bear, on July 18. Bonus link: the album is below
