New Music – Waxahatchee, Betty Who, Taped Rai
New arrivals on the OTR radar from Philadelphia, New York and Stockholm
Katie Crutchfield’s prolific streak as a songwriter has already produced a bundle of great emotional, confessional tunes as seen on last year’s bare-bones “American Weekend” album and the forthcoming “Cerulean Salt” set. Expect many to get tangled up in the Philadelphia-based performer’s mesmerising blues.
Sydney native in New York Betty Who marks her arrival in the frame with an awesome set of electropop shimmies and shakes on “The Movement” EP. A bright, brash and bold mixture of a-la-mode indie and timeless pop hooks, “Somebody Loves You” is the one to expect to hear a lot this summer.
Swedish duo Tom Liljegren and Alexander Ryberg may be associated with David Guetta through guest vocal appearances, but their own tunes are far from shabby. ”Shadow of the Sun” and “Backyard Animals” are superbly pitched, evocative, warm-hearted pop monsters.
