It was bound to happen: an Irish music festival with a half-marathon thrown into the mix. That’s what’s on offer at the Valentia Isle festival happening on Valentia Island off the coast of Kerry on September 14 to 16. Aside from musical turns over three days on three stages from The Rubber Bandits, Jerry Fish, DJ Kormac, Tieranniesaur, The Disconauts, Delorentos, the Frank & Walters, This Club, Daithi, Toby Karr, Fred, Ham Sandwich, Donal Dineen, Slow Motion Heroes, Billy Scurry, The Young Folk, Rhob Cunningham and tons more – plus a range of other boutique fest trappings – the festival’s debut outing will also feature the Valentia Island Half Marathon on the Saturday. Weekend tickets with camping are €94.50, while weekend tickets without camping are €79.50 (plus transaction charges).

The first three episodes in Aoife Nic Canna’s Near FM Folklore from the Dancefloor series on Irish club culture’s stories and characters are now available here.

After Earagail and Galway, the other big beast on the Irish summer arts calendar is the Kilkenny Arts Festival which gets underway in the home of the ex-Leinster hurling champions next month. Acts heading to the Marble City to play for the natives and visitors include Josh T Pearson, Rachel Grimes, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Jape, Warm Ghost, Cian Nugent, Mick Flannery, Katie Kim, the Archie Bronson Outfit, Resound, 3epkano, Aziz Sahmaoui & University of Gnawa, Seán Carpio, Steve Cooney, Matthias Loibner, Ivo Papasov, Mixtapes from the Underground, The Voice Squad, Dán and many more. Full details on dates, venues and prices here.

If you’re in a band and you’d like to play this year’s Hard Working Class Heroes festival, which takes place in various Dublin venues from October 4 to 6, you need to get your skates on. Closing date for all applications is this Thursday, July 26. Full details here.
