Every January, OTR heads to Groningen for a couple of nights’ quality binge-gigging at the Eurosonic festival. The festival orginally began way back in the mists of time as a travelling European Broadcasting Union beano called Eurorock (it visited Cork in 1990) and now attracts festival bookers and radio programmers from all over Europe. It’s where bookers go to find acts to fill their stages for the summer festivals (they’ve got a great scheme called the European Talent Exchange Program), where the radio folks get to fill their schedules with choice live sessions and where people like me get to hear brilliant new European music.

Thanks to the longstanding efforts of 2fm producer Ian Wilson, there are always a couple of Irish acts sent to Holland for the event (last year saw And So I Watch You From Afar rocking the roof off the brilliant Vera club and winning a ton of new fans).

The Irish acts heading to Eurosonic in January include Heathers, James Vincent McMorrow and Sacred Animals. More names may be added.

Other acts confirmed to play who I’m really looking forward to see include Agnes Obel, El Guincho, Gold Panda (interview with the furry fellow in The Ticket on Friday), Murder (saw them at the Spot festival in Denmark a few years ago and loved them), My Awesome Mixtape (who were impressive at Italia Wave in July), Ólöf Arnalds, The Vaccines (they’re going to be everywhere next year) and Youthless.

Eurosonic will take place in Groningen from January 12 to 15. More information here .
