    Mick Lally RIP

    Jim Carroll

The death has been announced of Irish actor and Druid Theatre co-founder Mick Lally. Best known for his role as Miley Byrne in long-running soap Glenroe (he played the same character in Bracken before that), he was 64 years of age. Condolences to his family and friends.

Sad for anyone who grew up watching Glenroe on a Sunday evening at 8.30 before the school week began again. Hard to think of him as anyone else but Miley. RIP

Quint – aye, it was always the sign for back to school in our house too.

JizzyK – yes, I remember seeing him around the SCR loads a few years ago when I was around there. A lovely, great, talented, decent man by all accounts.

Saddening news, Irish theatre just lost one of its greatest members. His dedication, enthusiasm and hard work with Druid will remain an inspiration.

Mick Lally is a great loss at this time; a great actor but most of all, a great person. He represented to me all that is good about this country and being Irish – a grounded, kind hearted, decent person. He will be sadly missed.

Everything Mick Lally did was done with the best sort of irish integrity and dignity. A truly magnificent actor and a lovely, lovely man. Deepest Sympathy to Peigi, Saileog, Manus and Daragh. The world of Irish theatre and drama is the poorer today. Go ndeanadh Dia trocaire ar a anam….

I never met him but felt I knew him and so I shed a tear as I heard the news on the radio. It was always pleasurable to watch him and listen to him. His family should be proud of this man. My sympathies to them.

In the words of Maoliosa Stafford in a Druid production Mick Lally was “Genuine”. He was instrumental in creating a vibrant theatre and arts scene in Galway and had the courage to leave secure employment as a teacher to follow his dream. He gave of his best on the stage and will be sadly missed by family – immediate and the wider circle of fans and friends. He was brilliant in The Dead School (P McCabe) at Galway Arts festival, superb in Waiting for Godot, wonderful in The Playboy and various other productions as well as his many TV roles.
It is hard to believe that we will not hear his distinctive voice again or see him stroll around Galway – a part of the city but also a man apart – the real deal.

I was honoured to have shared the stage with Mick in the early days of Druid and to know him in the early days at the Flowing Tide after his night’s work in the Abbey in 1978/79. Mick’s inimitable style on stage drew the audience right into his craft. Druid Theatre will be lost without Mick . Marie Mullin and Mick on stage together with Eamon Morrissey…………what electricity ,such a kinetic force , never to be seen anywhere else on any stage . Garry Hynes obviously brought the best out in Mick but we must not forget his early Taibhdhearc days which first introduced Mick to Galway audiences and initiated his passion for the acting . To Peigi andf family my sincere condolences.
