The pains of being pure at heart
Jim Carroll
Jim Carroll
Hello,
I’m french and I feel only shame after the Henry’s hand. I will not support France for the world cup.
You disserved your ticket …
Sorry, one thousand times sorry for the infamous way we went through.
Since yesterday night, I ‘ve been feeling nothing but deep, very deep shame. You fully deserved going through and you have been stolen. It’s that simple and so fully indecent…
Thierry, please, never ever say anything again about fair-play in the soccer world. You eventually lost any kind of credibility on the topic.
Be brave fellow Irishmen and don’t hesitate to crash us next time we meet, I will then be singing with you.
great performance, platini got what he wanted in the end though
Comment by peteeIt was absolutely shocking….
Comment by Leigh O'GormanYou hit the nail on the head Jim. I feel sorry for the lads, they played their hearts out…
Comment by fanning sessionsYou can be guaranteed that the sales figures for a certain brand of mens razors are going to plummet in this country as and from this morning.
And, like our English neighbours, we can go on and on and on about it for the next 23 years.
However, unlike our English neighbours, we were not then fairly and squarely beaten by a wonder-goal.
“Hand of God”? Insulting to Diego Maradona, I say.
Comment by ColetteGutted. Penalties, even getting hammered in Paris, not other form of loss could sting more than this, knowing we were the better team and that we lost because of a shameless cheat.
So much frustration that there will be absolutely no justice for Ireland for this.
Platini called for a retrospective ban for Eduardo when he conned the ref for a penalty for Arsenal against Celtic – lets see him call for punishment for Henry.
The pain, will hopefully, receed and we should be bloody proud of that team. 2012 Euros is a realistic goal now, and should be the send off the senior players in the team deserve.
As for Henry, for all his goals, his flair, his charisma and his talent, what he did last night ensures that his name will evoke thoughts of a cheat for hundreds of thousands of fans. I doubt he cares.
Comment by JoeFelt bad for myself last night but a quote from the young Sean St. Ledger would break your heart :
“It’s cost a lot of us our dreams – as a boy I used to dream of playing in the World Cup, and now I’m not.”
The last five words are painfully simplistic.
Comment by G-ManIreland played great. France have cheated their way to the world cup. And, Henry has forever ruined his reputation and will always be known as a Cheat. Fifa need to look at this. In the interests of fair play there should be a replay but that won’t happen.
Comment by TomI always underestimate the capacity of football to be so heartbreaking.. The focus on ‘cheating’ is wrongheaded though, sure Henry deliberately handballed it, but it’s up to the officials to call the foul, not the players, and I’m sure we’d be happy to chalk it up to good fortune it if an Irish player had won the game for us by doing the same thing. And McShane should thank his lucky stars for that handball because without it all the focus would be on how the hell he let the incoming free kick bounce past him. The real issue is that we needed to take one of those chances for a 2nd goal in normal time, you have to take excellent chances like the ones Duff, Keane and O’Shea got or these things slip away. You can’t not be proud of the team though, best performance in years.
Comment by RichieI am writing to FIFA to make a comment, even though I expect it to fall on deaf ears. Last night’s game between Ireland and France is a travesty for the game I have loved since I was a small boy. Mr. Platini and Mr. Blatter always talk about fair play and openness in the game, but I wonder will fair play win out on this occasion. The destiny of two football nations was last night decided by cheating! Is this what FIFA represents? I always assumed they stood for the exact opposite, but it seems actions DO really speak louder then words. Propaganda spin is all FIFA’s fair play talk is, for in a game that is losing its appeal by the week due to obscene wages and journeymen players, now cheating and the progression of the ‘big’ teams take precedent over fair play. FIFA claims to promote fair play but actually embodies the short coming of the game by actually reinforcing the fact that everything that’s wrong with modern football is actually dominant in FIFA’s policy. What hope has our game now I ask, I’m sure in 10,000 years football will still be, if not the biggest sport in the world, but at what cost I ask you? “What shall a man gain if he should gain the world but lose he’s own soul” I remember someone who is actually in the fair play game saying that! Before we go any deeper into our beloved game being controlled by money, remember what football is really about, it’s about skill, vision, passing, team work, being aggressive and winning fairly. That’s the soccer I fell in love with as a kid, dreaming one day of playing in the F.A. cup in wembley, not television rights, and big contracts and modelling contracts, it looks to me like soccer is dead, or at least only really alive on muddy pitches in parks played by the everyday man. Stop the cheating FIFA, only you have the power, stop the diving the hand balls, the fake injuries and stop it before soccer is no longer a game I want for my kids. Replay the game again and let the best team win properly whoever that may be. Do this not for Ireland or for the media, but do for the same reason you started kicking a football when you were a kid, do it for the football.

Comment by Sufi@ Stephen
Have you got an email address/ postal address for Fifa- Maybe other people will voice similar concerns if you post it up.
Comment by TomIreland did out play France for most of the match but can’t score and had plenty of opportunities esp Damien Duff. Robbie Keane was handling the ball all through the match – unfortunately this is part of the game.
its not henrys fault that the officials didnt spot it. 9 out of 10 players would have done the same thing that henry did.
Comment by derek m@ Derek M
Keane did handle the ball a few times but it was accidental on each occasion and he was penalised each time. Yes, the officials should have spotted it but you cannot condone players having a mentality of “I’ll cheat and if the ref doesn’t spot it then its ok” and lay all the blame on the ref.
Comment by TomThe look of sheer this-can’t-be-happening disbelief on Shay Given’s face was heartbreaking.
No 1 in the Fifa Fair Play code:
http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/worldwideprograms/footballforhope/fairplay/code.html
1. Play fair
Winning is without value if victory has been achieved unfairly or dishonestly. Cheating is easy, but brings no pleasure. Playing fair requires courage and character. It is also more satisfying. Fair play always has its reward, even when the game is lost. Playing fair earns respect, while cheating only brings shame. Remember: it is only a game. And games are pointless unless played fairly.
@ Tom
players cheat in every game its now unfortunately part and parcel of the game.
its the officials job to spot it.
i dont think all of keanes handballs were accidental.
i’m not condoning what henry did but i bet you keane or duff would have done the exact same thing as henry did if they were in the same position.
even trap has just said in his press conference that its not henrys fault and that the referee left the goal stand not henry.
as i said its missed chances in the 90 minutes that have cost ireland they missed so many chances to put france away that the incident should never happened.
Comment by derek mWell FIFA got what they wanted (all the big teams through) so at least someone will be happy this morning. Certainly not the Irish though and, by the sounds of it, not the French either. Fair play to their fans, the vast majority of whom seem to be admitting that they stole that game.
One of the most galling things about it is that Thierry Henry always seemed to me to be one of the more honest professionals. Does anyone remember after Barca beat Arsenal in the 06 champions league final, how he used his post-match interview to rail against the cheating tactics of the Barca players (diving etc)? I always admired him for that and he’s totally blown it now. Truly great player but he’ll be forever remembered as a cheat.
Comment by NeillThierry Henry is not the only fella taking a bit of a shoeing this morning. Swedish referee Martin Hansson has been receiving all kinds of flak in his homeland, with Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet’s report reading: “We guarantee they the Irish fans feel pretty bad today, but I sincerely hope there are three Swedes that feel even worse. They are Martin Hansson and his assistants. There will be no World Cup for Ireland and I assume that Team Hansson has also forfeited it’s right to continue to take charge of major international matches. Anything else would be a further insult to the Irish nation.”
Comment by derek mI don’t think that Keane or Duff would have done it. The first time it hit his hand i would accept was not intentional becasue the ball moved so quick. But, the second time it was a decision that Henry made to handle the ball with his palm and cheat. It takes a sneaky dishonest player to do that- i think that most players would have tried to play it with their foot.
Comment by TomNeill, have a read
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2009/nov/19/thierry-henry-handball-france-ireland
The whole ‘we wouldn’t have minded if we had done it at the other end thing’ is a) insulting and b) a red herring.
Comment by dealgaOf couse Keane and Duff would’ve done it. They both dive regularly. Cheating is a major part of soccer.
Heart breaking all the same.
Comment by nerrawI think Henry’s actions after the final whistle spoke volumes about what happened.
The way he sheepishly walked up to Dunne and sat down beside him like a dog would after being scolded by his master made for embarrassing tv.
That said I do think it was an instinctive action by Henry that a hell of a lot of other players would have done if they were in his position.
Instinctive might, barely explain the first hand ball, but the second flick? No way.
Comment by dealgaThe FAI has called for a replay with France after confirming that it will lodge a complaint with FIFA following the Republic of Ireland’s controversial defeat in Paris which denied the country a place at next year’s World Cup.
A statement read: ‘The Football Association of Ireland confirmed that it will lodge a complaint with FIFA, following last night’s World Cup play-off match between France and the Republic of Ireland in Paris.
‘Conclusive video evidence of a deliberate hand ball by Thierry Henry, which led to France’s additional time goal, has been seen by millions of football fans worldwide. The blatantly incorrect decision by the referee to award the goal has damaged the integrity of the sport and we now call on FIFA, as the world governing body for our sport, to organise for this match to be replayed. The hand ball, was recognised [by] the FIFA commissioner, the referee observer and the match officials, as well as by the player himself.’
The statement continued: ‘There is precedent for the invalidation of such results. In 2005, the Bureau of the FIFA World Cup organising committee reached a decision to invalidate the result of a World Cup qualification match between Uzbekistan and Bahrain on the basis of a “technical error by the referee of the match”.
‘The Football Association of Ireland is hoping that FIFA and its Disciplinary Committee will, on behalf of football fans world-wide, act in a similar fashion so that the standards of fair play and integrity can be protected.’
Comment by derek mThe army of clueless are rapidly losing us the moral high ground at this stage
Comment by dealgaLast night was one of the greatest injustices in sporting history and probably the saddest day in Irish sport. To me, I’ve never seen an Irish team play that well before, ever. All those guys are heroes: Dunne, Given, Duff, Keane but I would have single out Kevin Doyle and Liam Lawrence, who were absolutely immense and made me proud to be Irish, which doesn’t happen often these days. To then go out by a goal that should have been disallowed is absolutely heartbreaking.
That said, the hate campaign towards Henry is a little unsettling, lot of racist comments on Facebook and Youtube already, even one of the tabloids had ‘Hand of Frog’ on the front page this morning which is pretty disgusting. Henry seems like a likeable enough guy. That sort of instinctive handling of the ball he did is commonplace in the game, an Irish player would have done the same at the other end to keep the ball in play, to do anything to get a goal and get to the World Cup. Henry admitted the foul and told the ref so the anger should be directed at the ref and officials for allowing the goal, not at Henry. FIFA are also to blame for not bringing in video-refereeing which would have ruled out the goal immediately and also for not doing more to stamp out cheating in the game. I’m sure FIFA and Platini are delighted with the result, they got what they wanted so any sort of complaint to FIFA is futile.
Comment by QuintMontenegro 0-0 Ireland
Ireland 1-1 Bulgaria
Bulgaria 1-1 Ireland
Ireland 0-0 Montenegro
Maybe if we had won these four games we wouldnt be having this conversation. Do we really deserve to be at the world cup if we cant score one goal against Montenegro.
Comment by demonhenry is getting a bit vilified here… how intentional was it?… really?… the first touch was accidental, the second reactive touch was instinctive… deliberate yes but instinctive… most players would have done it without thinking…
apparently, he said it to the ref as well… but was told “i’m the ref, not you”… although i’m sure that he didn’t exactly shout it…
unfortunately cheating does happen in most sports… not all though… golf for one…

its a crying shame what happened last night to the team after one of the best games of football i’ve seen in a long time- i think last night everyone was shocked and devastated and angry and rightly so..but the racist ignorant remarks some people are making called Henry a n*****- i cant even bring myself to write it, it’s just disgusting…and making the rest of the irish look bad…
i think we all need to take a step back and watch what we say..i have a friend on facebook whose french and I actually apologised to her in an email in advance because of some of the comments that were left “jokingly” on my page by fellow friends, random people i know etc…she too apologised for the game and the way it ended and told me she felt ashmed, but this morning after reading some of the comments that have been floating around the internet, i feel a little bit ashamed..
Comment by carolineI’m not having this ‘most players would have done it without think’ crap, Er, no they wouldn’t, otherwise it would happen all the time, wouldn’t it? And of course it was bloody intentional – Jesus weeps. And when did he say it to the ref? While he was sprinting down the wing celebrating with his teamates?…
Demon, we earned our place in the play-off, FIFA changed the goal posts and we still earned, at least, a penalty shoot out. Our results against Montenegro are neither here nor there. If my aunt had balls she’d be my uncle.
Comment by dealgaI am french and I wanted to ask for forgiveness to the Irish people.
Thierry Henry, the french captain had an opportunity of entering the history of sport by the main entrance. If he had recognized his fault with the referee, he had the possibility of marking whole World with an example of sportsmanship. On the contrary he will go out through the window by leaving the image of a cheater. Our coach Raymond Domenech had also no slightest word of sorry. Shame to him. Unlike the algerians supporters who have destroyed windows and burnt cars in several cities to celebrate the victory of their team, the Irish supporters, who had legally the right to feel stolen made no damages in Paris.
I am very sad that Ireland is not qualified. Your players have made a big match and all the Irish people had to be proud of them. Regrettably I am french…
And when did he say it to the ref? While he was sprinting down the wing celebrating with his teamates?…
This, this a thousand times this. Have heard that peddled out in his defence all day.
Henry ran off behind the goal when Gallas put it it – when is he supposed to have had this chat with the ref? after the restart
Comment by JoeWhat can you say? Brutal injustice, heartbreaking, gut-wrenching etc etc
The people I feel most sorry for are the players. To miss out on the world cup finals in such a way is simply awful, especially knowing that for many of them it was their last chance to get there.
The most important thing is that FIFA put systems in place to make sure this kind of thing NEVER happens again.
Comment by Conor FurlongHave to say although I’m gutted, I agree with Quint, tabloids throwing around ‘Hand of Frog’ type headlines and people creating dodgy Facebook Henry hate groups that quickly degenerate into xenophobia & racism about aren’t doing anyone a favour, just making it a lot harder to hold the moral high ground.
Similarly, there was some Irish comedian I’d never heard of (Simon O’Keefe anyone?) on a Sky News panel earlier today with an apologetic French radio broadcaster to discuss it, but from the off he just started insulting the whole of France with the usual tabloid muck stereotypes, was fairly hard & embarrassing to watch as he was being malicious about it & had to be warned to tone it down.
I’d hate to see this spun as a type of vendetta against the French. The vast majority of reaction I’ve read from the French public has been sympathetic, and like what Ginola, French government ministers & the Gallic posters here have said, there’s a strong sense of shame about it. The majority of us do, but I hope people (and the tabloids) recognise this & focus on the real culprits (Henry, match officials, FIFA) rather than the easy targets.
Comment by RonanI’m starting to feel a bit sorry for the French fans. They’re so apologetic!
Comment by Neilli admit the saying it to the ref thing is a bit unlikely… and the point is that he had the chance to do the right thing and tell him…
but dealga, the hitting it with his hand instinctively… i absolutely stand by that…
Comment by AllyIt’s beyond a joke at this point Dara O’Briain was on newsnight discussing it with the (now very, very grey) David Ginola last night.
Comment by IanNever using gillette razors again. Classless, cheating cunt. Why dunner didn’t deck him at the end is beyond me
Comment by andyFIFA are determined to ruin the sport they govern in the minds of an entire nation. Do they not get how bad this looks? It’s the front page of the US edition of CNN. Soccer has been thought of as a cheater’s sport in the US for years and it just confirms that. Football is often heartbreaking when played by the rules for 90 minutes. It pisses you off when you see faking and deceit in a league game, but when this happens and there’s no recourse it makes a complete mockery of the officials, the rules, the organisation and hojnest players. The sport is in disgrace and FIFA don’t get that. It must raise questions in the minds of people in the sport. And why Roy Keane thinks it’s a nice oppurtunity to renew old enmities is completely beyond me.
I’ve been reading the comments on Liberation, Le Monde, Le Nouvel Observateur and the French fans are completely embarassed. I don’t expect a replay, but I don’t see why Henry should share in the World Cup. He should withdraw voluntarily to try and save some face or he should be banned from the compeition. It might make other players think twice, not about handling the ball but about failing to correct the injustice by telling the ref, by trying to correct the wrong they’ve done. With so much pressure I can see it happening to any striker. But to celebrate and wait to see if the ref calls you on out on something so underhand is what I regard as really despicable.
And Domenach… The obnoxiousness of that man leaves me fuming.
@ Ronan 39
Simon O’Keefe runs capital comedy club in town, he does the MC for it, allbeit badly. I’m guessing they couldn’t get anyone else to appear on Sky News, cringe!
