  • Thank plug it’s Friday

    November 13, 2009 @ 2:13 am | by Jim Carroll

In The Ticket this week, 50 Cent tells us why it’s tough out there this weather for a hip-hop playa, we profile a new DIY guide for girls who want to rock and Cymbals Eat Guitars share the contents of their rider with us

There’s New Music hip-hip-hurrahs for Free Energy, C!ties, Slow Motion Heroes, Traz and Percolator, while the Music News has stories on Other Voices, Autobahn’s Mad Hatters Ball and Fucked Up and friends doing their version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”

Album of the week comes from Michael Nyman and David McAlmont (a glorious collaboration) and there are also reviews of releases from Twinkranes, Ceu, St Catherine’s Homes for Lazy Infants, Tori Amos, JLS, Noelie McDonnell, The Mountain Goats, Keith Jarrett and many more.

New flicks for your viewing pleasure (or displeasure) include The White Ribbons, 2012, Harry Brown, Cold Souls, Amelia, Taking Woodstock and Tulpan. Plus movie news, DVD reviews and the weekly quiz to make you realise you don’t know as much as Donald Clarke.

All this AND - ta-dah - the finest guide to going out in the land.

The Ticket: flying high every Friday

This is probably (with a bit of luck) the only OTR plugs post which will ever be written in Newark Airport, New Jersey. We’re en route to Canada for the Music Newfoundland and Labrador conference, but the weather has meant flights are delayed and I’ve found out more about this airport than I ever really wanted to know. Rang Bruce to see if he wanted to do lunch, but the dude was out. Still, found this reminder of the aul’ sod while I was wandering around trying to stay awake….

    image095a.jpg

The OTR plugs service is open for business. Plug and recommend away to your heart’s content, but remember to declare an interest where one should be declared. Please note that plugs are accepted on the whim of OTR and may be edited for length/clarity/common sense. Events with a commercial sponsor are really ads and will probably not be published in this slot. Please note that I’m a couple of thousand miles away so comments will not be updated until the afternoon. Over and out.

The IDA is running a big print and tv campaign in the US right now - the NY Times carried a feature on it last month.

“Privileged class of innovators”? Ho ho.

In defence of Newark airport, it’s got a Krispy Kreme stand AND a Brooklyn Brewery bar. Beat that, JFK.

Cannot stress enough how bloody amazing C!ties are. An album would cause a ruckus for sure. Get them into the big gig scene rightaway, I say.
Oh and everyone should get to Academy tonight to see SEBP sing Comets live with Heathers, along with BATS, Le Galaxie and Band On An Island as support. That’s a great big scoop of good bands there.

    While I’m here: http://iheartau.com/mag/issue-61-pleasantly-ravaging/

Featuring hot stuff from AIR, EDITORS, PHIL KIERAN, SUFJAN STEVENS and a host of zingy others along with (*DOI Alert*) my own killer interview with HEALTH backstage in Dublin. ‘Mazin’…

The playlist for the recent Sweet Oblivion show on 2XM is up on the blog: http://sweetoblivionlovesmusic.wordpress.com/2009/11/11/sweet-oblivion-playlist-11th-november/

There are videos for nearly all the songs so if you missed the show, you can catch up - don’t forget it’s repeated at 10am on Sundays too!

I just set up a facebook page for the show in the last week too: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sweet-Oblivion-on-RTE-2XM/166294689606?ref=mf

Am hoping to do a ‘listeners’ favourites’ show in December so if you want your fave song of 2009 to be included post it on the page.

Firstly: Brooklyn Brewery bar! Beats most airports then. They were selling Brooklyn Lager in Tesco on a special offer for a while, strangely. Lovely stuff. Just need a Pieminster next door.

Secondly: EXXON VALDEZ is a great name. Two Xs and a Z, add a scrabble triple word score and you’ve won. High expectations could be attached to name like that though.

Thirdly: WOODS were great the other night, lets have them back and more of the woodsist crowd.

Finally: Music New Foundland and Laborador? I’m feeling perverse for going to hear some Verdi instead of Irish soccer fans cries of anguish but that’s a long way to travel to avoid seeing Govou ripping through Kevin Kilbane.

If only you were allowed out of Newark Airport i(t’s got a Nathan’s Hotdogs Stand too!), you could go to the world famous music club & restaurant Maxwells over in Hoboken - they do perogies that’d make you weep with joy.

Go and play on the monorail - it kept me sane one 5 hr stop-over….
