  • Tune of the Week - “Floating Vibes”

    October 29, 2009 @ 1:14 pm | by Jim Carroll

This is the first ever tune of the week to come from Florida. Bet you that made you pause for through.

The name of the band is Surfer Blood and, yep, they’re another new band. Look, there will probably come a point when we run out of new bands, but it’s a few months away yet. We’ve enough to get by until June 2010 at least. Best to just enjoy the show for now and quit your hollering about churnover and all of that. There will be enough time then to wonder whatever happened to Tapes ‘n Tapes (or were they called Clap Your Hands Say Tape?).

Anyway, getting back to the subject in hand, Surfer Blood. These kids from West Palm Beach already have an album all ready to go. It’s called “Astro Coast” and it was recorded by the band in a dormitory room at the University of Florida. More bands should do that, especially if you end up with catchy hooks, surfarama harmonies and timeless power-pop chords.

We like everything we’ve heard from the album to date - “Swim (To Reach the End)” could also have been the tune of the week - but we like the way “Floating Vibes” makes its presence felt, how it ducks and dives away and where it finds itself going. Enjoy it here, download it here or throw your eyes over the live video below.

i’ll have you know i still listen to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s debut regularly! it’s an absolute classic, can’t understand why the backlash was so vicious. even Pitchfork seem to have disowned them..

but yeah, these guys are class. going on what i’ve heard people say, they were one of the highlights of the CMJ festival

Caught these guys post- CMJ on Monday. Really really impressed. They kind of remind me of Weezer at times but with more cowbell,

Still getting them confused with Surf City from NZ who are possibly even better.
