  • Tune of the Week - “Moskow Discow”

    July 2, 2009 @ 12:29 pm | by Jim Carroll

    Time to catch the train.

One of my favourite albums from this year is The Juan Maclean’s “The Future Will Come”. It’s got a win-win mix of tough disco, swoonsome electropop, edgy synths, euphoric Italo disco, acid house stabs and deadpan vocals on loan from the Human League. Perfect music for driving, it will take you back to LCD Soundsystem’s arty disco and plonk you on the edge of that dancefloor.

But the more I listened to it and the more I thought about LCD Soundsystem, the more I kept coming back to Telex. There’d probably be no LCD Soundstystem or Juan Maclean without this Belgian band - just as there’d probably be no Telex, I suppose, without Kraftwerk.

When it came to electronic pop, Telex’s Marc Moulin, Dan Lacksman and Michel Moers were ahead of the curve and, boy, they knew it. The trio always employed a mischevious approach to what they were doing and you can see it in their bunch of po-faced cover versions, their championing of disco at a time when everyone else was clutching guitars and, best of all, their 1980 turn at the Eurovision Song Contest. According to Wikipedia, they got dix points from Portugal for their vocoder-enhanced “Euro Vision”. Go Portugal!

“Moskow Discow” was their boom tune. There have been various remixes and redos over the year (Carl Craig did a bleepsome version, for instance), but I’m digging the original. Video below. Those seeking even more out sounds should also explore Moulin’s solo albums like “Sam Suffy” or “Entertainment”.

    Great tune.

For anyone that’s interested, there are still tickets left for Springsteen on Sunday. The seats aren’t great though, side of stage.
