Dong! Free gigs in Dublin! It’s the return of the Salon Music series for the fifth year with a bunch of free shows in the ballroom of the lovely Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park. Hitting the salon will be Julie Feeney (July 21), Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill (August 4), John Taylor (July 28) and Tarab and Xi an Si (August 11). Tickets will be awarded by lottery and you can enter via this website. Remember: if you’re not in, you can’t win.

Dong! What time is it? It’s Banter time! Banter is a new monthly-ish series of informal chats, debates and discussions around pop and pop culture. The first one takes place next Saturday (July 4) in the Mezz room in the Twisted Pepper (Middle Abbey Street, Dublin 1) and will look at “the state of Irish music radio - past, present and future”. The speakers: Paul McLoone (Today FM) and The Golden Maverick (Power FM). The eejit keeping it all together: er, me. Admission is free but capacity is limited so to guarantee your place, please email your name to conor@bodytonicmusic.com with ‘Banter No1′ in the subject bar.

Dong! Another festival! It’s the Moondance Music & Arts Festival and it will take place at Petersburg House, Clonbur, Co. Galway from August 14 to 16. Giving it (pop) socks on the shores of Lough Mask will be Lisa Hannigan, Jape, Jerry Fish and the Mudbug Club, There are also arts workshops, yoga, theatre performances, storytelling, stand-up comedy, art exhibitions and a Mask Ball with Kila. Weekend tickets are €115.

Dong! What’s that? That’s Pixies, dude! Pixes play Dublin’s Olympia on October 1 and 2. Tickets will be €54.80 and €44.20 and go on sale on Friday at 9am. They’ll be marking the 20th anniversary of “Doolittle” by playing the album - and assorted b-sides - in full. It will be just like the time they played in the National Stadium with the Pale Saints as support. Ah, old age, I knew there was an upside.

Dong! Belsonic returns to Belfast! Er, I just found the press release on this but we heart city fests and we need a chance to go “Bonkers” so here’s the belated skinny. Playing Belfast’s Custom House Square will be Dizzee Rascal and Vampire Weekend (August 27), 2 Many DJs, Deadmau5 and Boys Noize (August 28) and Dukebox with Duke Special, Bell X1 and guests (August 29). Tickets are £29 per day.

Note to gig promoters who will now try to clog up the comments plugging their gigs: we have a weekly plug-for-all on Friday so save your breath for that.

It’s going to be a good day. B-o-n-k-e-r-s!

Maybe it’s just that I’m used to seeing crazy prices for these legacy gigs (are the Pixies a legacy band at this stage? I think they are.) But those pricses seem reasonably reasonable to me. I was talking to someone yesterday about it and we both agreed that attendance would be dependant on price and I said that if they were charging less than 60 quid for tickets I’d be surprised.

Though if I absolutely had to see a New England indie rock band from the 80’s play a gig I’d much prefer it to be Mission Of Burma.

I think it’s the Ry Cooder effect. Promoters know that punters just can’t afford and can’t push themselves to pay high ticket prices any more for what are, after all, luxury purchases for most.

It’s a curious achievement. To be so brilliant on one tour and then to be actually horrendous by the next time you come around. I’ve always wondered about that one.

Was it simply a manifestation of the backstage problems? Were they simply hitting their fat elvis phase? Did they just not care?

I think friday will be a fastest fingers first affair by all accounts. No “Cooder Malfunctions’ here….

That Pixies in The Point show wasn’t up to much alright. Although the encores of “Tame” and “Head On” were thrilling. The gig supporting the godawful Chilli Peppers in Phoenix Park was a lot better. In the Olympia they’ll probably play a tune in memory of that musical genius who died last week…. I speak, of course, of Sky Saxon from The Seeds.

I was at both Pixies shows in the National Stadium and Point and can’t remember anything about them.

I always find it qutie amusing when present-day commentators say how under-appreciated the Pixies were in their day. Yeah, so under-appreciated that they sold out the biggest indoor venue in this country BEFORE “indie” music got co-opted by the mainstream.

Eek, Los Pixies are back, back, BACK! And, gasp, a ticket I will be able to afford in a venue I love (have seen TOO many shows there not to love the place). Show at the Stadium was amazing (36 songs, 90 minutes), show at the Point was so-so and show in the Park was the reason I went in the first place.

And yes, Mr Rascal doing “Bonkers” (to which the crowd did go bonkers) was shown on Glasto at the weekend. Saw the man himself being interviewed on BBC3 or 4 on Sat eve. They also showed his interpretation of The Ting Tings “That’s Not My Name” which he performed in a pin stripe suit (which he then ripped off a la a male stripper - Velcro, where would we be without it?).

Off to break the Pixies news to a friend…

The National Stadium was a hoot alright.
So much anticipation at the time.
Doolittle had classic stamped all over it, the kind of record you kept playing over and over.
And ever since Surfer Rosa, Graham Linehan had been evangelising their merits at every opportunity in Hot Press.
    Jees, so long ago.

    Looking forward to these shows.

I read it again Jim, this time more calmly, but I still don’t see where to get the damn tickets. Pixies MySpace doesn’t give any details and TicketBastard doesn’t have any listing except Glasgow.

Man, I stood ticketless outside that damn National Stadium gig, watching limo after limo disgorge minor Irish rock royalty onto SCR. None of them had any tickets either but they were all on the guestlist. Did get to meet Kim Deal and Joey Santiago wandering round though, apologising that they couldn’t get us all in.

Apols if old news but Pirate Bay to become legit,

“We would like to introduce models which entail that content providers and copyright owners get paid for content that is downloaded via the site.”

Paying the copyright owners for content that is downloaded via the site (which actually are only torrent files and not copyrighted content) can mean different things. They could share advertising revenue with copyright holders which would probably be the only revenue sharing model that would not have a huge impact on visitor numbers. It would surely be different if they would roll out a subscription based model.

I think Linehan called Surfer Rosa (his caps) “THE BEST ROCK AND ROLL ALBUM RELEASED IN THE LAST 10 YEARS” in those ‘Graham Linehan’s 1988′ things they used do.

Continuing on an unrelated but equally B-O-N-K-E-R-S theme, I am bemused to report that some hardcore loons have created a memorial to the ‘King Of Pop (C)’ between HMV and Next on Grafton Street, Dublin.

All patrons moonwalking up and down the street can stop and pay their respects with music being played and some beautiful flowers, pictures, and personal messages already placed there.

Admittedly I don’t remember Michael Jackson wearing much clothes from Next but I’ll go with the fans’ better judgement…

Jim, I never heard about Steven Wells until your comment above.
He was writing in the NME around the time I used to read it along with Andrew Collins, Steve Lamacq and Danny Kelly. It was his articles about the likes of the Butthole Surfers, Young Gods,Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr. and probably the Pixies that made me start listening to more US music( Yea I know the Young Gods are Swiss) I think he was also an early champion of Pavement.

In the last few years, he wrote some great articles about sport for the Guardian or the Independent. He had a great article recently about all the doping controversy in baseball and how boring a sport it was. His argument was that if ever a sport needed drugs; it was baseball.

    R.I.P.
