Tune of the Week – “15 to 20″

    Jim Carroll

This is how we’re rolling at the moment

The name of the band? The Phenomenal Handclap Band. It’s a pretty stonking handle, isn’t it?. Actually, do names matter? Would you read this blog in a different way if I was called, I don’t know, Hugo or Rudi or Juan-Pablo? Would you call yourself by a different name if you had the choice?

Anyway, they are the Phenomenal Handclap Band and they hail from New York City. Daniel Collás and Sean Marquand, two of the city’s premier league funk and soul DJs (and Joe Bataan fans), put the band together. And man, what a band. Onboard, you have talents who have previously worked with TV on the Radio, L’Trimm, Calla, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Mooney Suzuki and Sí Se all heading for that far-away land where Giorgio Moroder is grooving with ESG, Tom Tom Club, Chk Chk Chk and a load of other bad-ass disco dons and dollies.

What the Phenomenal Handclap Band are coming up with is block-rocking music for that block which has room for old-school funk romps, go-go hollering, space-age synths, soulful chanting, sassy rhyming, cosmic disco derring-do and even some prog-rock fixings. Some block, some rocking, some band,

You can check out the killer tune that is “15 to 20″ and a couple of other sweet-as beauties from their soon-come debut album here. And please, start clapping.

Some nice and simple, likeable tracks on there.

It made me reach for Roy Ayers’ Everybody Loves The Sunshine which can’t be a bad thing.

    Thanks

That’s a fine collection of indie-fringes, never mind the quality moniker.

    very nice.
always partial to the type of delivery/tone of the girl on ‘15 to 20′ mixed with some “block-rocking” grooves. much prefer ‘15 to 20′ and ‘You’ll Disappear’ to the male lead vocal tracks, Though maybe I just like being reminded of telepathe.

Ha! I admit it, I would read this blog differently if you were called Rudi. Rudi Carroll. It’s got a ring to it . . .
