On the movies side of the house, there’s an interview with Meryl Streep, Michael Dwyer’s Oscar tips, Donald Clarke on why Oscar night is film’s version of New Year’s Eve and DC’s review of the Dublin International Film Festival so far. Reviews too of this week’s new releases, namely Gran Torino, Che Part 2, Cadillac Records, Push and Confessions of a Shopaholic.

Was anyone at the screening of ‘Anvil: The Story Of Anvil’ last night? It was AWESOME!!! Really funny, sad, warm-hearted and uplifting. The band attended the screening and at the end ran through a few numbers, to a standing ovation.

It’s out on general release real soon - don’t miss it.

And while I’m at it, tune into Noise Annoys on 103.2 Dublin City FM on Thursdays at 10pm where I play better music than Jim Caroll!! (plug plug!)

Yes! Anvil was so good. Such an honest and entertaining music documentary… the Spinal Tap comparisons are inevitable but don’t do it proper justice

Seeing the band play a gig in the cinema was pretty freakin’ surreal

That Anvil thing reminds me that the best band I ever saw in the Ambassador were Talking Heads when they used to screen Stop Making Sense there many, many years ago. The band didn’t play (or even turn up) unfortunately, but it was a great flick

Hey, maybe we should put together a rock’n'roll film festival! There’s TONS of flicks and music docs I’d love to see on a big screen.

@1 - Noise, I was there too! Brilliant night and one and I will remember for a long, long time. The documentary is fantastic and one of the best I’ve ever seen. As you said, it’s so funny but so heart-breaking at the same time. Ultimately, it’s hugely uplifting. Loved the way they launched into the music unannounced after the credits were over…it was like they just jumped out of the screen. Amazing experience.
The music is great. As mentioned in the film they were playing hard, fast metal before the ‘big 4′ of Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer appeared in the mid-80s and you can definitely hear their influnce.

Were you talking to frontman ‘Lips’ after? Such a funny, warm, interesting guy - one of a kind really and really inspiring listening to him. Rob the drummer is so quiet and reserved..amazing to think they are so close when they are so different to each other. If you only see one movie this year (I think it’s on general release March 7th) - GO SEE THIS ONE!!

@7 Quint - Unfortunately I couldn’t stay for much of the Q&A because I had to leggit to do my radio show. A mate got a pic with him and said he was dead sound. You could feel the warmth from the audience to the band so much. It was fantastic.

Jim - it’s such an obviously great idea that I’d be surprised if the IFI/IFC never did it. There’s so many possible titles, in so many genres - Rock N Roll High School, Gimme Shelter, The Filth And The Fury, Blackboard Jungle…

Can’t think of one. Definitely a good idea…some of the bvest documentaries in recent years have been about music…’Ramones:End of ther Century’, ‘The Mayor Of Sunset Strip’, ‘The Devil and Daniel Johnston’…you got ‘Screaming Masterpiece’ about how Iceland produces so much incredible music from a tiny population…for metal fans ‘Some Kind of Monster’ about Metallica and you could get Anvil back to play live again after a showing of ‘Anvil! The Story of Anvil!’.,,,classics like ‘Buena Vista Social Club’, ‘Don’t look back’, ‘The Last Waltz’, ‘Stop Making Sense’… there are loads of them, come to think of it. Spoilt for choice.

that Sholi record is tremendous. Slightly Agree re: the over fussy drums (but I think they don’t detract too much), but Strongly Disagree re: the lo-fi production. That ain’t lo-fi in the least, that’s some immaculately recorded music, I’d say some gorgeous and pricey gear was used. Drums in particular are gorgeously recorded!

I opened up my copy of the ticket and was surprised to find a review of the new Bell Orchestre album in there considering that it in fact only leaked yesterday. A&C seem to have done a good job keeping it under wraps.

Very much looking forward to listening to it if I can make time for it this afternoon. Loved the last album and really enjoyed seeing them open for Arcade Fire in Central Park in 2005. Fingers crossed for an Irish gig this year, though I wonder if people would show up expecting an AF style extravaganza, I’ve always felt that Richard Reed Parry is the most interesting musician in that band.

loved the dail report in the todays paper.
“I remind the Opposition that in the past it has used the little inner circle quite well. While I hesitate to use the name of Dr Garret FitzGerald, a man I hold in the highest esteem, and I cast no aspersions on his integrity, he had a major loan paid off by AIB.’’

Leas Cheann Comhairle Brendan Howlin intervened to say it was not the practice to mention individuals who were not members of the House in any way that might cause an adverse reaction to them.

Mr Kennedy said he would refrain from doing so “and I will state that a former member of this House, who was a leader of a political party, had a loan paid back by AIB’’.

Labour finance spokeswoman Joan Burton remarked: “Was it Mr Haughey? We are a bit confused

    Re: Music Documentary fest

Its a good idea, Im always on the lookout for music docs in the IFI and Lighthouse. You could also possibly screen some famous concerts like Hendrix at Woodstock, Otis Redding Live in London or the Last Waltz? It would be great to see them on the big screen and with a souped up sound system.

A few other that are worth a mention:
    Wild Combination - Arthur Russel
Tom Dowd and the Language of Music
That Daniel Lanois doc (I didn’t make it or the one off screening but heard its good)
    The Kids are Alright
    Arthur Lee & Love
    Monterey Pop Festival
    Mellodrama - the Mellotron Story
    the Miles Davis one

    Lots of potential…

I have a feeling that the IFI did do a music documentary festival, or at the very least have covered many of those mentioned in their regular documentary festival. Specifically remember Daniel Johnston and DiG, but that could have been their regular releases.

Even still, they really only scratched the surface. Also, the cinema tent at the Picnic has attempted this, to an extent, with screenings of many of those mentioned inbetween shite like Napoleon Dynamite or whatever, but let’s face it, only stoners want to spend any serious length of time in the cinema tent at a festival.

I think you’re right Jim, that it would be great to include Irish stuff in a strong programme of international stuff. I never got to see that “Stars Are Underground”(?) or the other one that were part of that whole Underground thing with Road Records last summer. I’m sure many a gem could be dug up. Now, I’ve got a cheap projector, so who’s gaff are we doing this in?

Re music on screen - I’ve hoped for years and years that the film fest people (or even those just-as-nice folks up the IFI or Lighthouse) would do a fest-within-a-fest for music on film. My fave film of all time is probably “32 Short Films About Glenn Gould” with “The Red Violin” coming somewhere in the top ten. Getting to see “Stop Making Sense” and “Sign O’ The Times” late on a Friday night in the Ambassador was one of those teen things I did (yes, I was too young to be there - they were meant to be 18s shows - but hell, we had little entertainment in those days). And who wouldn’t love to hop around in the aisles at the start of “Blackboard Jungle” to “Rock Around the Clock” - or how about “The Commitments” or “The Blues Brothers”?

I’d also always hoped that they’d do a fest-within-a-fest with classic comedies too. I’ve seen “Dr Strangelove” on the big screen but would love to see “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and “History of the World Part 1″ on the big screen.

I emailed the IFI years ago.(no reply),and had many drunken conversations with friends about this idea.I’ve seen loads of great music docs in the film centre over the years.
My suggestion would be…start a database…pick a pub with a big screen…see who’s got a selection flicks at home and then show them on dvd.it could be a very nice sunday afternoon type day out. I’ll volunteer the (unreleased)MC5 doc from a few years ago.
