Road Records to remain in business?

    Jim Carroll

Following on from last month’s story that Road Records is to close, On The Record has learned that moves are now underway to ensure the Dublin record store will remain open for business.

These plans revolve around a Save Road Records investment club with a number of music industry personnel and other interested parties taking a shareholding in the business. It is hoped that this investment will mean that the Fade Street store remains open and allow it to develop a long term strategy.

    Furter details as they emerge.

I’ll have my broker buy some shares immediately. That’s great news, if it turns out to be right!

Did they not close due to increasingly slow business and high rent? Why would investors buy into that? Long term strategy seems a generous, nearly altruistic angle for investors to take. Sure whatever keeps it open, I suppose. Good news indeed.

sounds good… wonder if we’ll see the downstairs (or upstairs) utilised for something else (regular gigs, coffee shop, beanbags strewn about)…

Wow – that would be great news. I think that many have people realised that they had taken Road for granted and had fallen out of the habit of shopping there over time – hopefully a relaunched shop would make money from people realising that they need to support the shop on a regulat baiss rather than just when it’s in trouble.

Rumour has it that U2 now have a controlling share in the business. They’ve already applied for planning permission to put a glass atrium on the roof.

Great to hear some people are doing more than just talking and moaning and pointing the finger of blame and are actually taking some action. Dunno if it’s the best investment ever but I’m sure it’s better than the banks!

Great stuff, Road needs a shot in the arm (as we all do from time to time) some investments are about more than money. Here’s hoping it works out. Rock on Dave and Julie!!

Nothing wrong with the occasional Eagles reference. Without them we wouldn’t have had…Jackson Browne, plaid shirts, the bubble-perm/beard combination or even bare knuckle fist fighting on cocaine with your band mates.

I’m currently disassociating myself from that particular place. They’re creating a lot of bad press for me.

I heard something about this when I was in the shop a while back. Apparently they’re helped by the fact that the landlord isn’t rushing to get the premises back. I heard something about them being able to pay rent near weekly.

    Still is great news

In these bleak recessionary times, I’m gonna stick with getting cheaper music online and from iTunes rather than traipsing all the way into town in the rain to buy the equivalent album for between 5 and 10 euro more in Road Records (if they have it). Best of luck to Dave and Julie and it’s good to see they haven’t lost their livelihood yet. They’re obviously feeling the pinch…Unfortunately, so am I.
