Antony & The Johnsons, Ireland, 2009
Jim Carroll
The awesome Antony & The Johnsons return to Ireland in 2009. They play Dublin’s Vicar Street on May 31 (Antony and co’s Vicar Street show in 2005 featured very prominently in the list of memorable shows in that venue over the last 10 years according to On The Record readers) and Belfast’s Waterfront Hall on June 1. The new album “The Crying Light” is out on January 16 and, believe me, it’s a humdinger. Tickets go on sale on Friday (€40.20 for Dublin and £22.50/£25/£27.50 for Belfast). Video for “Another World” follows

mmmm… i think i might go to this… i’m in need of some warm, cosy music again (even though this is 6 months off)…
hope / presume it will be the same tables and candles as his first two vicar street gigs…
Ally – that gig in 05 is probably one of my favourite gigs of all time. Such an amazing vibe in the building. They even turned off the air conditioning because the audience was so quiet you could hear the fans whirring over the music!
Thats exciting news indeed, twas a very special evening indeed, as was last night at Antony’s friend and collaborator Joan As Policewoman at the Button Factory. Despite all the people moaning about acts who play here too often, Joan delivered her finest performance yet in Ireland. Aided by a couple of Irish lads on horns she blew me away with ‘Magpies’, ‘I Defy’ and ‘Anyone’ and also showed off an interesting new direction with some new material. A great night. Can’t wait for the new Antony album in January.
yeah jim… have to agree with you… he played twice i seem to remember, once in june and once in november… the one i was at was a very, very enjoyable evening…
Ciaran – the new album will knock your socks off
Ally – Yeah, you’re right, there were June (or was it July? Just checked – it was July, Saturday July 2, 2005 to be precise) and November shows.
Yes!! I’ve been waiting for this for ages! I was at the gig in 05, i’ve never forgotten it…special special couple of hours.
Brilliant, looking forward to this.
Well that’s one thing off the Christmas list – pair of Antony tix for the sister. Looking forward to the new lp; “Another World” was one of my songs of the year.
That’s great news, really love the new ep. Missed the 2005 show in Vicar Street but saw the show at the Electric Picnic. Probably not the ideal environment to be honest, but it was still a good enough show to prompt me to ask the (now) missus to marry me at the end of ‘Hope There’s Someone’. So I’d probably end up going to this gig even if it was Ry Cooderishly priced…
Tickets for the Dublin show will be €40.20. There you are – you can get three Antonys for one Ry and still have money left over for a smoked cod, chips and a mineral from Burdocks on the way to the gig.
Will update the Belfast prices when to hand
I heard a new track on the radio last night – lovely stuff and catchy too. (I can’t remember the title, though.) I’ve always wanted to see him live – a silent, spellbound crowd without militant ‘SH!!’-ers is always magical. (I thought comment 2 said ‘you could hear the fans whining over the music’. That’d be a Frames gig, of course.)
I love your comparison of Antonys to Rys, Jim. That’s of course one Ry to 3 Antonys if you are planning to go on your sweeney. If you are cheeky enough to want to bring ‘a friend’ to Ry, you could be bringing a group of six to see Antony.
In those terms, I am starting to feel physically angry at Cooders’ pricing business. And I’m not even interested in going. It’s just simply on principle. It really is effectively the price of three other decent gigs….
Saw one of the Johnsons last night at the Button Factory – Joan that is – Splendid gig apart for the incessant chatter and bar noise at the back. What is it with cretins who go to gigs and spend their time talking, whats more important than the moment on stage? Wouldn’t go back to the Button Factory because of the noise factor. Pity – it’s not a bad venue otherwise.
Best news Ive gotten in the last two weeks
James D – I checked with Burdocks and the price of a smoked cod is €5.75 (theyll throw in a scoop of chips too – and free crispy bits if you mention On The Record) so you can basically get six Antonys for two Rys and have enough left over for three smoked cods between youse as well.
Christopher@ 13, didn’t think it was too bad, i’ve heard far worse, just make sure you get up close enough that you’re not too near the bar. i thought the gig was fantastic, suprised there haven’t been a few more mentions!

Great news. Both gigs in 2005 were fantastic, I nearly went over to London to catch his orchestra shows in the Barbican recently as he hadn’t played here in so long.
If he’s scheduled for the Waterfront which seats over 2,000 I presume we can expect to see another date on the 30th in Vicar St.
‘Another World’…Dear God, that’s pretentious. I’ll probably be lynched here for saying this but I don’t get the appeal of Antony at all. I find him unremittingly dreary and pretentious, his voice is very much an acquired taste.
Aidan@11…sometimes ‘miltant SH!!! – ers’ are needed at gigs in this country to get the usual asshole quotient at gigs to stay quiet so genuine fans, who have paid a lot of money for their tickets, can enjoy the gig. I was at Mogwai in Hammersmith Apollo and during one of the quiet bits someone shouted ‘SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!’ to the idiots talking at the back. We need some of that at Dublin gigs.
Quint – sure, life would be boring if everyone agreed on everything. One man’s “unremittingly dreary and pretentious” is another man (many men) and woman’s (many women) “totally awesome”.
