These are the very best of times for new music
I wonder what it would have been like if we had the internet back when I did music talent-scouting for a living. Back then, you waited for a band to stick their demo tape or CD in the post to you before you could make up your mind about them. You didn’t hear a band name and immediately fire up MySpace to listen to them within seconds. You didn’t have that instant access to their music, that immediacy, that ability to hear to a band and be able to rave about them right away.
Sure, you could argue that more time was taken back then and the acts had more time too. But I’m an impatient person and I very much prefer to be able to hear the music right away and get the show on the road. It’s why doing The Far Side radio show is such a blast – a weekly chance to air the best new tunes I’ve heard that week from acts like Everything Everything or The Temper Trap or Stricken City or Passion Pit or Hockey or Pretty & Nice or the truly awesome Dinosaur Pile-Up (you’re going to love them, trust me). Nothing can beat that fizzy, buzzy high when you make an instant connection with a tune.
Enter Sexy Kids with “Sisters Are Forever”.
This much we know so far. (1) They hail from Glasgow. (2) People who like the Vivian Girls and The Raincoats are going to love the Sexy Kids. (3) The band’s name was obviously selected before they Googled it. (4) Some of the Kids were in a band called The Royal We who released a cracking tune called “All The Rage” on Geographic last year. (5) The single has come out on Slumberland, which is a bit of a go-to label for smart, sexy pop thanks to acts like Crystal Stilts and Cause Comotion! (6) “Sisters Forever” is a classic darn-toot-it slice of indie pie. (7) And yeah, we all love our sisters too.
