Tune of the Week – “Too Fake”

    Jim Carroll

Yes, friends, it is time to start thinking about the bands of ‘09

It comes around so fast, that hinge between the end of one year and the start of the next. I know, you probably don’t want to be reminded of that on this November morning, but those of us who toil in the deadline business know that that time is just around the corner.

Inevitably, you spend the end of the old year looking back and the start of the new year looking forward. We wait for the BBC Sound Of 2009 poll to try to inform us who we might be getting excited about. And we also look back at the BBC Sound of 2008 poll to see where it all went horribly wrong. Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, anyone? Nope, me neither.

A safe prediction for 2009 is that there will probably be a hot band from the United States for every single day of the year. Lets call it the Obama effect. That seems to have been how it worked out in 2008 and I don’t really think next year is going to be any different. No Joe Lean and his Jing Jang Jongs there. Well, there probably is, but we do our best to ignore them. We’d also ignore them if they were Swedish, Polish or Mexican. No bias here when it comes to ignoring the Jing Jang Jongs of the world. Equal lack of opportunities for all Jing Jang Jongs.

Anyway, one of the bands we think will feature on your love list for 2009 are Hockey.

They are four scruffy young dudes hailing from Portland, Oregon, Hockey making music which sounds so damn obvious that you wonder why no-one bothered with this before. “Too Fake” starts out like LCD Soundsystem busting a move under a dusty glitterball before the guitars are plugged in and it hits another kind of momentum entirely. Still funky, still sleazy, still big bananas. But different. The lyrics are wordy and smart and gritty, the work of someone who knows that literarate tunes are never a turn off for girls or boys who like girls. The album is called “Mind Chaos” and, now that CD Baby have decided to take my money, I know it’s also full of similar infectious soundtracks and songs to feed your head with.

Get into the “Too Fake” groove here.

    Another Portland, Oregon band?
There’s so many of these f*ckers now.

Horse Feathers released one of my sleeper albums of the year.
Incredible record that scarily very few people know about. And they obviously hail from Portland too.

But my favourite Portland band at the minute: Hello Electric.
    Go to their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/spaceflight127
And listen to the first song “The Bear King“.
The guitar riff is so easy but catchy-as-fuck. Love it.

    God bless Portland, Oregon.

I hope 2009 will be a great year for irish bands, fight like apes seems set to take off in the UK, and Halves seem to be going in the right place also, and recently I picked up a 5 track album from an Irish band called Sweet Jane, just bought it on impulse because of the polaroid photograph on all their covers in Tower Records, and my god was i pleasantly suprised.

Jim have you any Irish ones to watch for 2009?

Brian – here’s a list of 10 Irish acts for you to check out in 2009

The Lost Brothers (“Trails Of the Lonely Parts I and III” is a fanastic wee album)

Fitch (have you heard her yet? “Celocity” is so sweet)

Stee Downes (Really like his new stuff)

Cap Pas Cap (new single rocks like a mofo – hopefully, debut album will appear in ‘09)

    Katie Kim (Check out “Twelve”)

R.S.A.G. (His “Organic Sampler” album will rock your world)

    Armoured Bear

    Clone Quartet

    In Case Of Fire

    Fighting With Wire

I like it. The way the volume of the music just tanks when the chorus comes in is… daring.

The R.S.A.G. album is also stellar. The bonus disc (allegedly his first album?) is a little hit and miss, but disc one is incredible.

Dave – hugely infectious tune alright. And I’m with you 100% on the “bonus” RSAG disc. Took one listen to it, went “meh” and left it to one side to concentrate on “Organic Sampler”

A bit harsh on the RSAG bonus disc, I would have thought lads. While not as fully formed as Organic, there are some pretty little ditties on there, particularly The Rise of Kin, but the final four tracks are all good. I’d urge you to give it another shot

The Clone Quartet have been knocking around for a good few years now and I think it’s their time now! Great band. I also like Panda Kopanda from the North too.
As for other Irish bands I would like to see do well for me The Ambience Affair are ones to watch and the already mentioned Halves.
