  • 10 reasons why Oasis have not yet decided on a ticket price for Slane

    October 16, 2008 @ 10:35 am | by Jim Carroll

    (1) The whole sterling/euro thing is confusing Liam Gallagher

    (2) Band management are keen to use the gig to trial a revolutionary pay-per-weight ticket buying scheme

    (3) MCD are working out if the new income levy applies to their acts.

    (4) Noel Gallagher is insisting on getting paid in Silvermints and Brunch ice-creams

    (5) Lord Henry Mountcharles wants Dara as the support act, but band think he means Dana

    (6) Band want to add Joe the Plumber, Joe Six Pack and Joe Le Taxi to the bill and are checking about fees.

    (7) Gem Archer believes that Oasis fans will happily pay over the odds to see them stand still on a stage. Promoters unsure if fans will really pay €90.90 (plus Ticketmaster charges) for that.

    (8) Ticket price to be determined by the cost of the Topman Spring/Summer collection

    (9) Staff in MCD have lost the office calculator

    (10) Band’s agent is waiting to hear back from Polish builders about the cost of the extension on his gaff before agreeing to ticket price.

    (11) MCD need to find out how many car parking spaces the Oasis entourage need.

By the way, not too happy with the US election stereotyping that’s going on. Why are we Joe’s pigeon-holed like this? Can’t American Joe’s drink a sixpack and do plumbing at the same time?

No word on supporting acts either, or not much talk about them. Who do people think will play? For what it’s worth I predict:

    - Token “fuck me, are they going?” Madchester “legends” (James, Happy Mondays, Ocean Colour Scene, er, Northside)

    - Whatever band Johny Marr happens to be in at the time

    - Token dance act for ver kids - everyone elses cue to queue at the bar (Prodigy, Faithless, Calvin Harris, Basement Jaxx, Justice etc)

    - “Edgy” indie band with “attitude”, a couple of albums and links to either Oasis, their label, their manager, MCD or the knackers that will be there on the day (Kasabian, Fratellis, Reverand and the whatevers, Biffy Clyro, Razorshite, Editors)

    - “Hot” band du jour with one song the crowd the recognise (any one of a hundred: Glas Vegas, Friendly Fires, Vampire Weekend, Ting Tings, MGMT, Klaxons etc etc)

    - Aging act who has played far too many festivals in Ireland in recent years (Paul Weller, Primal Scream, Manic Street Preachers, Ian Brown)

    - “Cool” band most people have forgotten about since they stopped reading the NME years ago(The Strokes)

    - Token Irish act with links to either Oasis, their manager, their label, their roadcrew etc (The Blizzards, Mundy, Paddy Casey)

I’d bust a gut laughing if Modest Mouse were on a bill under Oasis.

With depressing inevitability, the two support acts at the Wembley Stadium shows are Kasabian and The Enemy, two acts so dreary, unimaginative and retrograde they make Oasis sound like Battles. Expect the same rubbish support acts for Slane + Paddy Casey, probably. I’ll be avoiding the Slane gig next year like one would a Bubonic rat.

Why are people complaining about shit bands supporting Oasis? It’d be more annoying if there were good bands playing which means I’d miss out on seeing them playing their own gig.

True enough, a lot of indie landfill there including the ludicrously overrated Glas Vegas but Friendly Fire’s ‘Jump In The Pool’ is fantastic….probably their only song that anyone will ever recognise, but what a song…

1 thru 13 well done the haters are back in 2008.
Make sure to stamp it all into little small bits and then piss all over it for good measure.

Very sad reading indeed..infact very depressing reading bunch of negative haters talking to each other rather than off the record.

Cormac @ 13 - so if people express an opinion that they don’t like a particular band that you like, they’re “negative haters”? I just thought they were people with good taste.

It’s quite apparent you don’t know much about reading.

Just heard The Blizzards have got this gig too. So that’s Kasabian, The Enemy, The Blizzards and Oasis. Would this line-up even sell Marlay Park?

    ehhh no your exactly wrong.
Nothing to do with the music I like actually which is not oasis but it about me my friend.
Just a comment on the depressing, negative, dirt that now makes for a blog.
why not kick the polish a bit as well while we are on about it nothing like a lazy stereotype to keep things on track.

Ah jaysus cormac, lighten up there (oops, no pun intended). All the shiny happy people are keeping a million miles from Oasis.

If you want to read some more “depressing, negative, dirt”, check out the AC/DC thread.

For happiness, joy and some gentle chuckles, have a read of the Playlists thread.

Rather see Oasis stand there and play properly like a rock n’ roll band should than see that numpty Bono attempt to promote world peace with a bandana on his head that has the symbols of the major world religons on it!! Keep the prices down though Oasis, I’m broke. The Coral, Ocean Colour Scene and some token Irish band to support them.

Maybe I’m showing my age, but anyone recall Oasis at Slane in 1995? Supporting REM?

As Oasis were coming onstage the big screens showed an advert for that years Feile, the soundtrack of which was provided by one of the headlines - Blur. So to the tune of Parklife Oasis took to the stage, this was in the middle of their little spat. Quiet funny at the time.

Anyways someone f**ked a bottle (or rock?) at Liam and he threatened to leave the stage.

Great band in ‘95, piss poor now.

€76.50-€86.50 for standard tickets - cheaper than I’d have expected.

Hospitality/VIP packages for €300 and €690 (wonder what the latter gets…)

    Any more confirmed support?
With the new Kasabian & Prodigy stuff this is getting a better gig all the time!
Should be a couple of decent Irish acts on the bill, theirs quite a few new bands I’d like to see more than the Enemy.
